Recently I went to New Orleans with a group of youth bowlers from town to the junior Olympics. We spent most of the time in the bowling ally and our bowlers, including my son did very well and we brought home plenty of medals.
I did manage to find time to go to the Old Mint Museum and look around for a while. They have quite a collection of O mint coins and some of the machinery left over. I thought I would share some pictures from the mint.

Very cool. I have not had the opportunity to tour the New Orleans Mint. The last time I was in New Orleans (3 years ago) the building was being renovated so I was not able to go inside. After seeing your photos of the inside of the NO Mint I have a renewed interest in touring this piece of history. It is one thing to walk around the Mint and see it from the street but it is something else entirely to tour the inside. Lots of history in that building.

The museum itself is fairly small in one room, but the history is amazing to me.

Was the 1844-o Proof $10 gold there? I think it was on loan or something of the sort. I remember there was a big deal with Paul Hollis bringing it back to New Orleans

I remember reading about that now that you mention it, but I don't recall if it was there or not. They did have several gold coins on display though.

I don't recognize the piece of equipment in the fourth picture of your second post. Do you remember what it is?

I was going to ask the very same question. Looks like a place keep in mind when in N.O.

If I remember correctly it was used to check planchet or coin weights. I'll have to look into it.

That's what I was thinking it looked like, an automatic planchet weighing machine.

Very neat..I have never been to the New Orleans one, but I have been to the Carson City and Philadelphia one. I wasn't allowed to take photos in the Philadelphia mint.:(

The NO mint was damaged during Hurricane Katrina back in '05 and was closed for several years until it was restored. All the displays were fine and never damaged though, fortunately.

I enjoyed seeing your pictures - I would like to visit Norleans sometime, been near there but never into the city.

And yes, the CC mint is a lot of fun, I truly love any and all CC gold. I want to get some O gold sometime soon, preferably a $20.
