PCGS' "Genuine" means that the coin has been damaged or cleaned or AT'ed or whatever so that it cannot receive a normal grade.

A coin graded genuine is just a problem coin that has a problem, and they will not grade, but is telling you the coin is real.

    No Grade Description
    91 Artificial Color
    92 Cleaning
    93 Planchet Flaw
    94 Altered Surfaces
    95 Scratch / Rim Dent
    97 Environmental Damage
    98 Damage

    Hmmm,

Thanks for sharing those codes for grading genuine coins. I am curious about the 93 code, wouldn't a planchet flaw be pre strike damage or am I not understanding the term correctly?

Once a planchet is struck then it becomes a coin so I would say yes, it would be pre strike damage. Though the more knowledgeable may correct me if I am wrong.

In N'awlins, we don't call it a planchet flaw. We call it a parquet flaw.

Okay, so why would it not be labeled as such and be graded accordingly instead of genuine? Forgive me, I may still not be grasping the concept but it isn't considered pmd in the way that cleaning or some of the others might be.

Because PCGS doesn't want to be associated with the working class - cleaners, machinists, painters, etc.

Because the coin is considered damaged. It is not PMD, but still damage.
