Here is another - 1793 S-9 Wreath. Not without its problems as can be seen, but still one of my favourites.

Problems or not, what a great looking coin. You never get to see these coins with such detail. I love it!!

 

This coin illustrates original mint luster underneath the patina (particularly the reverse, which is more heavily patinated).

I'm having trouble finding coins like this these days, and I'm quick to offer strong money when something pops up.

Here's something surprising... the 1820 is much more common in Mint State than later dates in the 1830s and even 40s ! Why ? Because long ago someone took a small keg full and stashed it. That stash is the famous Randall Hoard. Many of the coins come from a single die variety - this one, the 1820 N-13. It's characterized by the circular obverse die crack. On the reverse, there's a leaf below "D" in UNITED whose tip is well right of the "D".

Thanks to this coin, I was able to meet and greet the great Bill Noyes, a true legend in Large Cent lore. As he passed our table, this one really caught his eye.

I got to chat him up for a while. I asked what advice he would give us younger guys. With a gleam in his eye, he offered only two words of guidance :

"Buy quality !"

 

Bought this one as a kid before MS70 came out. Someone messed with it.

Of course Bill Noyes is right on with his advice - I am, however, not always able to follow this advice (specially when compelled by mundane reasons like cost!), and have been known to buy less than quality coins, like this 1794 S-41. I still like it though, and it was OK for the price.

The 1800 S-212 is more appealing, with no obvious faults.

Not a stellar example, but did once belong to the Beebes, and sold 1986 as part of their collection.
