I'm trying to find an accurate test that I can use to tell whether a coin is PL or DPML (DPL). I came across this test when I searched the topic on the internet. I tried printing out the chart and put one each of my NGC-graded PL and DPL coins to the test, and both flunked: I can only clearly read the words 'SEMI-PL' in the fields of my supposedly PL coin, and I can only clearly read the words 'PROOF LIKE' for the the coin graded DPL. Do you think this is an accurate test? If not can someone suggest a better (and easy to apply) test for determining whether a coin is truly PL or DMPL (DPL)? Thanks. http://www.coingrading.com/plcoins1.html
The reflection test works better on a raw coin. When you try the test on a coin in a slab the light has to pass through the plastic twice and that reduces the distance you can read the letters.

Oh, I didn't even think of that. That makes perfect sense. Thanks for the explanation, folks. Is there a better test you can recommend for slabbed coins? Or do you just have to learn to eyeball and recognize PL and DMPL (DPL) coins through experience (looking at a lot of them at shows, etc.) Thanks again.
Not unless it prints out that page with all those words in different size fonts. In my browser they are all the same size. Rules for PL and DMPL are simple - clear reflection at 2-4 inches = PL. Clear reflection at 6-8 inches = DMPL. Clear reflection at 12 inches = UDMPL.
