I'm trying to determine who the face on this coin is - can anyone help with this and how do you tell? Thanks! https://rlauctioneers.auctionserver.net/view-auctions/catalog/id/1/lot/4/
I am not the best with ancient coins, but I have seen lots of Alexander the Great coins. The portrait on this coin looks familiar.
My guess is a later Ptolemy (X to XII??) and my feeling just from the photo is that the coin is a copy made for the modern jewelry setting.
Ptolemy! Wow The plot thickens! Thank you for this great info, now I'm thinking this looks very much like Ptolemy!! I am definitely learning something here. Much appreciated.
It does look more like a Ptolemy. I found this ad in a 1964 issue of Ingenue, a magazine for teen-age girls: Ingenue Magazine September 1964 The top right coin looks similar but not exactly.
The OP coin is either genuine or a cast copied from a real original. The ones in the magazine ad upper right (safety pin with three) are complete fantasies and not made to deceive. The upper left and the bottom one look like they may have been made with a genuine coin in mind but we can't expect real coins and real gold on $1 jewelry even in 1964. Note they even say it is "gold" and "coined thrice".
Thanks for this magnificent information! I am impressed with the body of knowledge everyone has provided me. Very helpful! Thanks so much!!
