NGC just introduced an interesting new way to research all US coins. The Coin Encyclopedia seems to take off from the PCGS Coin Facts and will go several steps beyond. Plus it's free rather than $100+ per year for Coin Facts. I finally got the time today to explore it and I'm impresed. It doesn't include auction prices yet but offers a lot of detail for every US coin in one site. It's definately going to save me a lot of time and eliminate the need to visit several different websights when making buys or bids. Personally, I was pleasantly surprised when looking at proof Roosevelts to find pictures taken from both Jaime Ness's and my registry sets - kinda' cool. Our 50's proofs are some of the best possible. I think all of us on CT will find this a really useful tool! I'm definately anxious to see how it changes/improves over time. I'd really like to know what others have to say or comment.
Are you referring to "Coin Explorer"? I've used it a few times. It's pretty cool. I love that it's free. I also love that it links to photos taken by NGC registry members as part of their NGC Registry sets. Interestingly though, it only displays the coins from the NGC Registry Sets which are graded by NGC (not PCGS -- even though PCGS coins are eligible for the NGC Registry). I am perfectly fine with that little quirk, as I'm personally kind of annoyed that the PCGS Registry Sets can't contain NGC coins. It's good for the PCGS bottom line, but being exclusive is NOT good for the hobby, IMO.
WOW, this site is really great. It will be even better when more auction data and historical pricing is available.
Photos of PCGS slabs posted by Registry members is not the same as NGC using those same photos for their software programs. PCGS still retains some measure of proprietary rights over the use of those photos. Chris
I've been using that for awhile-you can't beat FREE!! I also like being able to check on current coin values for FREE!! You also can see if the coin has increased or decreased in value and in higher demand recently as well as if gold and silver are on the rise or dropping. Oh yeah, and it's FREE unlike PCGS! And the po' folk like me can step up my membership at any time.
Not unless PCGS took the photos. If they are photos taken by the coins owners and uploaded to the NGC registry then the rights belong to the person who made the image, and NGC also has rights because you will probably find that you granted rights to them to use images uploaded to their site.
