I just thought I would start a thread and post the finds each time I come across them. I have been a Teller for about 2 years now and just got into collecting. Also any questions you may have for me I will answer them.
Today was an exceptionally good day. I usually come across one piece of silver per day but today I came across 2 silver quarters, 2 90 percent halves and 2 40 percent halves.
Alot of the time I dont see what they are giving me because its rolled. I have told a customer and they changed the coins in anyways. The rest of the tellers I have come across dont know or care about silver. They probably take alot in and give alot out without knowing it. The other day an older lady came in with over a roll of silver quarters and said she had her coins evaluated and the guy told her these were worth nothing. I gladly changed them in after asking her twice and bought them myself.
Also a tip chances are if you have a teller that is up on their silver game then they already scanned the rolls in the boxes and rolls they are giving you for silver. I know I do.
Question, I am 15 and when I can work at my local bank as a teller I want to jump on the oppurtunity. How old do you have to be to be a bank teller, and are there any requirements?
You have to be 18 to work at a bank and as long as you have a clean record you have a chance. Also cash handling experience will help. Joey I work at a small, local bank not in your area.
Small local bank... bet they get most of their change from customers. Or they might have clear rolls like us here in PA.
Must be. I see clear rolls of dimes up my way sometimes. I've had to turn them down or if I know the teller I get a quick look at them and decide.
My tellers like the freebies I give them, gift cards, British sixpences, etc much more than any coins they are saving for me. When I go into my banks they all know me by name, and greet me with the most recent acquisitions. Today I got $122 in Ikes, a proof 1977, a BU 1973 and nearly a hundred that are sharp original BU with amazing roll toning. I also bought up the nickel roll acquisitions and got a dateless, but definitely type 1 Buffalo from 1913 that has the mound. At another bank they sell me the bags of commercially deposited coins run through their counters - in the past couple of months I have gotten three Indians, an 1891, and two 1907s. Several dozen Buffaloes, three Liberty nickels - 1903, 1905, and 1910. Oh, and silver. Yup, and that is all I say about that.
My daughter and some of her friends worked as bank tellers at the age of 15. It was a very law and order bank. If the customers were lined up out the door and the teller broke open a roll of cents, she would stop to count them. They expected their accounts to balance to the penny.
I've got a friend that works at a bank and although she keeps silver and such she does keep an eye out for star notes for me. On a side note I wish the gas station I work at still got our rolls of coins with the clear wrap, so much easier to spot any silver.
What kind of rules are there in these kind of situations? Are your employers aware that you take silver and rare coins out and balance it with other monies? Everywhere I ever worked, I had to have another employee process any transaction whether it be breaking a dollar or buying a soda. That's awesome to be able see so much coinage and buy it for face I am just curious to how you go about it.
