1917-S Mercury Dime in PCGS MS63. Unfortunately this coin is for sale online and I am unable to see it in person. The dealer is asking about $20 less than what Numismedia values it at. This leads me to believe that most people find this toning undesirable. Again, the pictures aren't ideal, and personally I am unsure if I like this coin or not. This dealers descriptions are typically spot on, and they describe this coin as "frosty cartwheel, mostly brilliant, and well struck"
I prefer more colors when it comes to toning. It is a nice dime, but I am also indifferent on its toning.
It is definitely not a positive, but I am not sure if it goes neutral or negative. However, I will give you an interesting tidbit. Numismedia prices it at $192, but PCGS prices it at $175 which just happens to be almost exactly $20 less than numismedia's price.
I voted neutral, but the more I look at it the more distracting it seems to be. Almost kind of takes away from the coin.
Hmm, that's very interesting. Most times I check the PCGS guide the prices are a bit higher than Numismedia's price and what Teletrade prices realized were.
ok im kinda both "No" its unattractive but i dont think itll effect market value...title kinda only tells 1/2 whats going on
I don't find it attractive either swagge because of the hazy look to it. If you're not sure that you like the coin I'd pass on it. Bruce
No opinion. I have 2 potential difficulties with your image: 1. Looks like it was scanned OR if a camera was used, the lighting setup was not good. 2. From experience it might be one of those coins that looks better in hand than in an image. Cameras/Scanners "see" or "enhance" features that the eye doesn't, and generally those features aren't the positive ones.
well just saying when i say the thread title i was expecting a rainbow, crescent toning etc...when first saw the pic i wasnt a fan (my opinion) however when i checked the "no" option it also has the price value mixed in....to clarify: I dont like the toning but dont think itll lower the market value
Well here is my take on that coin. I have 6 of them that are toned in that exact fashion, a set of 44-45pds. The toning is slightly mottled or in streaks across the coin. The toning is mostly in the light to steel gray color with bits of gold and blue inflection. It is not unattractive toning, but neither is it beautiful toning. But, that particular kind of toning is something I've only seen come out of Raymond Wayte albums. That is where I received mine from. I would say that little guy spent quite a few years, maybe as many as 50 or more in a RW album to get that toning.
