I currently own 8 of these beauties, and was fortunate to buy them new from the mint before prices soared to the current levels. I have kept them safely stored in my locked sealed Pelican case in my safe as they came from the mint. I am considering, however, to send them into PCGS for grading. This gets to my question grade Certify them -or- leave them in the original U.S. Mint Holders? Not sure if any will catch a MS70 grade, and there seems to be no value benefit (other than PCGS certified for a MS69 or lower grade example). Thoughts? TIA!
I'm not saying I know the answer to this. I own one of these coins in it's original packaging. If I were to be back on the market for one, I'd be shopping for the OGP rather than a slab. E It also seems to me that a big benefit of a slab is a slab certifies authenticity. It's a guarantee against a counterfeit. ( Even though slabs can be counterfeited also). But with the UHR I don't see how they can be counterfeited. The minting process is far more complicated. Just my thoughts.
Unless you are going to sell them then why have them graded? If you plan to sell them then why not, if you get a couple 70's you will almost certainly get a premium over a 69 or ungraded coin. I like mine in the mint box so it will not be going anywhere. With that many examples together have you seen much difference between them?
Thanks for the input. For the first time ever, there is a well-worn (handled) UHR on eBay with dings and the like. As time goes on, I suppose condition of un-slabbed coins that are available to be handled may see condition degradation over time and put more pressure on unslbbed coin sales.. This could add value to slabbed examples, maybe. But I suspect most people won't be abusing or neglecting their UHR's so this is likely to be the exception, not the rule. My guess is most UHR's that aren't slabbed will never leave their US Mint holder - but who knows the % of this?? I have credit-vouchers with PCGS to have all of my UHR's graded for Free (regular service, less shipping and admin. fees and my cost to mail the registered and insured). I'm really on the fence if I should follow through with it. No doubt a slabbed coined adds some piece of mind to lot of buyers out there should I later sell them, but that doesn't seem to have slowed the sale of unslabbed coins one bit. In the end, I own these coins as a collector first and foremost, but am thinking down the road one day should I sell them. Still on the fence what to do, but leaning towards getting them graded.
It seems the focus on the difference between a 69 and 70 is the condition of the rim more often than the fields. I certainly feel of the UHR's I have a have a candidates for both 69+ & 70. The premium (and pride of owning a graded 70) would be nice, but as you pointed out, as a collector it seems keeping them ungraded is equally beneficial.
If there still sealed as the mint sent them,I would not have them graded. I also got 5 back 2009 I opened 1 and put the other 4 unopened in my SD box. sealed and still unopened has made 2009UHR a 2-3x spot @2009 price. I have been offer $2995.00 just for 1 sealed one.so I think in the future they will go up even more? I hope!!! :thumb:If your 2009UHR has been opened I would send it to Pcgs! :kewl:
Thanks for the feedback, Jello. 4 are opened, the other 4 are still in their sealed US MInt shipping boxes (but not eligible for any of that First Strike/Early Release designations as I ordered those 4 in October '09 from the mint website). On your opinion and how I've been leaning, I'm going to go ahead and send in the 4 UHR's that I have opened. Thanks everyone!
My UHR is an early release but I didn't send it in for grading because the plastic capsule containing the coin is too large permitting the coin to bang around inside the capsule. The coin obverse and reverse are beautiful but I'm convinced the rim is less then perfect. The more they are handled it's a safe bet the rims will get dinged up sealed box or not. Secondary buyers may eventually become aware of this problem. current opened box price is $2,599.00 http://moderncoinmart.com/cart1/product.php?productid=20881&cat=0&page=1
Well, those of you who said to NOT have them graded, may have been right - in the realm I'd still have my coins graded or not. It seems my coins have gone MISSING in transit within the US Postal service. They're 2 days past due from they're "expected arrival date", and when I spoke with my postmaster from the post office I sent them from, I was told to call the USPS 800# and report it as it should have arrived by now. I did call the 800# and they assigned a case #. I am just hoping that the package miraculously get's scanned in at it's next next stop/destination by Tomorrow or Monday, or I'll only think the worse has happened. For those who may be wondering yes, I shipped them Priority/Registered Mail, Insured, & with Return Receipt/Signature Required.
When they first came out I sent five of them to pcgs three of them came back ms70 one of them was real shiny but I was afraid to send to Ngc because if it didn't grade Pl it might not grade 70'the second time Around the when pcgs started grading Pl I sent it back in And it came back ms70Pl now I'm trying to decide if i should sell it and buy more. I hVe seen them sell for between 5000 And 6500
Not to panic yet. You did send it registered. In time, the package will show up at it's appointed destination. I (as with my humble one) would have left it/them in OGP.....
Croaker, A MS70PL UHR is certainly nice to have and demanding a premium. I haven't seen any actual sell at the $6k level, though there have been asking prices that high. Seems that there is a strong floor at $4k for the PCGS MS70PL. Strictly a personal call on your part. But if I were in your shoes, I'd keep it on the collection unless you plan to use it to acquire other coins... I'm just hoping my USPS shipment to PCGS turns up tomorrow or early next week. -AU79
Was the PL designation available for coins that were submitted for early approval? It seems to me these began first showing up months after their release. I have a UHR MS70 First Strike which I was thinking about resubmitting for a possible PL designation. Especially, if the PL grade wasn't being originally offered.
Salty, I recall seeing PL designations come up for sale n the May/June '09 time frame, but they may have well been assigned earlier... IIRC, the first I saw was out by NGC. -AU79
A few minutes ago, I got some reassuring news about my delivery. Seems that even though I mailed the coins Priority Mail/Registered, the scans at the Priority Mail Level are not required and may not always post online from one location to the next.. I am told only the Express Shipping Level tracking works like that of UPS & FedEx. The reassuring part is that the Registered service requires an individual USPS employee personally sign off as receiving the package at each transfer location, but that is only seen on USPS' internal system ,and not available online. I suppose this is why they require a 15-day waiting period from that date of shipping to actually file claim, even they assign a case # before hand. So it may be that the package made it through, but the updates haven't yet posted. All new info to me. It was also noted that sporadically this year Priority Mail from coast to coast has been longer than the 2-3 days advertised (because of cost cutting routes), and it was duly noted that it's not a guarantee - just an estimate of time, and that only Express comes with a time guarantee. Seems I should have shipped Express. I'll know for next time... Added: Anyone know how long it typically takes for PCGS to log in a submission online once they physically receive it?
