Hello Forum. I'm fairly new to coin collecting and mostly collect Standing Liberty Quarters, Walking Liberty Halves and Peace Dollars. It all started about 6 months ago when I was able to purchase 12 Peace Dollars and 2 American Eagles at a local bank for face value,,,which was 14 dollars!!! Ever since then I've been hooked on silver U.S. coins. I've made the rounds in my town to all the local pawn shops and gold and silver buyers and have 2 locations I buy from regularly. Yesterday I went in to my favorite place and someone had just recently sold off a bunch of SLQ's. I found a barely there 23 P, 26 D and a 27 S. I know the mintage on the 27 S is 396K so I was hoping you experts out there could give me an honest grade and value on these two coins. I paid 7 bucks a piece for them so I think what ever the value will be I'll be ahead in the game. Thanks.

Hey Adam, welcome to Cointalk! It is very addictive especially if you make a great score like you did for $14~~~!!! You did pretty well on these SLQ's as well, I am no expert and you really need to post pictures of both sides of the coins but you did good. The 26D is pretty common but in G4 condition which is probably what these are, the the 1923 has a book value of about $15, and the 27S has a book value of about $35. You could probably get $10 for the 1923 and I would think you can get $25-$35 for the 27S.

    Very nice pickups!

Since you have started buying this series, I would prefer to hear how you graded this coin and why. Welcome to the boards.

Nice score. SLQs are one of my favorite US coin series. Such a classic art-deco design. The 27 S is a semi key date in lower grades, once you get to XF and above, it's one of the keys to the series and the price really sky-rockets. Your 27S appears to be in G4 condition. You've still got complete rims, but the gown details are pretty much worn flat. Seeing the reverse of the coin would also help put a more accurate grade on it, since there are some clear delineators with the wear on the eagle. Even in G4 that coin retails for $30-40. So I'd say you did quite well for seven bucks. Oh, and welcome to CoinTalk.

Thanks JJK78. Next time I post pics I'll be sure to do both sides. Thanks for your input.

    Here's a 1918S I picked up several months back at a pawn shop for 8 bucks. Grade/Value? IMG_20110813_152042.jpg IMG_20110813_151952.jpg

Wow! Two amazing scores! Both of those coins could get $30.00 easily if listed on eBay, but I'd keep 'em! They're nice coins and great starters for any collection :). Mind giving out the address to the pawn shop??? Hahaha. ;)

You'll be surprised what you can find in the middle of what's considered "junk" silver.
