Here's my most recent large cent addition. I was pleasantly surprised when I received the coin, as the seller's photos made it look quite flat. The dies were rotated about 45 degrees, as shown in the photo.

Please guess the grade, and feel free to comment on this coins plusses and minuses. HINT: It is graded by NGC...Mike

I was going to say AU58 because of the darker spots on the front....but after seeing the back I'm going to go with MS62.....

I think AU55 mainly because of the wear above the eye, and on the stars about 2 o'clock and 7 o'clock. But that reverse is great and I love the die cracks. Great coin.

You got the bonus point. Well done!

I'll save the grade for a bit later.

    Thanks for the guesses/comments thusfar.

I'm going to have to say AU after further review. The front looks like it has lots of wear, but the reverse looks nice, which is confusing.

I was going to go AU58 or AU55, but that didn't sit real well after seeing close up pics-my guess AU-53.

It looks like minimal rub / wear on the front. Back is excellent. I'll go with AU58.

    AU-50

The large mark between United and States on the reverse hurts (unless it was from the die).

Only slight amount of wear that I can see.

I'm on dialup so I didn't get to see the larger photos till today.....I see some rub on the lower part on some of the hair.....since that is there I'm going to have to say AU58....the back seems to have tons of luster though.

MS-61. I'd grade it a bit lower, but NGC seems to allow more wear above forehead, on the stars, and to the denticles when assigning MS-61/MS-62 grades to these cents than I'd expect. It's a beautiful coin.

Thanks for all the kind words and guesses.

The coin was graded AU 58 BN by NGC.

My thoughts on the coin are as follows: The coin exhibits a nice natural brown tone. Both sides still exhibit mint luster, with the reverse moreso than the obverse. There is also clearly some light rub on the high points, a few spots on the obverse, and a dig on the reverse. Overall, I grade the coin AU 55.

It is a very nice specimen, and I had to pay retail price to get it, and I'm happy I did.

    Take care...Mike

I'm am now convinced that I must grade coins of this type more like the EAC does than how the TPGs grade them. Know what I mean Mike ?

Yes I do. When I first saw your response, my first thought was that your grade about equals what EAC would grade the coin.

Grades are so all over the place, particularly so for large cents. As a result, rather than grade coins, I tend to "price" coins. This is one of those cases where they came out about even -- the coin went for retail AU 58 money and that was what I was willing to spend.

These coins are not common with surfaces like this, as I'm sure you are aware, so if you want a nice coin you have to ante up.

    Take care...Mike

p.s. just got another large cent today, I'll post it in a separate thread.
