I'd like some opinions on whether you believe if this coin, if cracked-out of it's current ICG slab, would arrive back from PCGS in an MS63 holder if resubmited. I understand that their grading standards are far from the equal. Also, in this coin's current slab, how much would you pay for it knowing that it may TRULY be an MS62 or even MS61? ALL OPINIONS ARE GREATLY APPRECIATED! Thanks in Advance, -Brian (CLICK PHOTOGRAPHS FOR INCREASED SIZE!)
I'm thinking 62. Nice coin but the dark areas in front of Liberty make me wonder if it was worked on a bit. Maybe just the image. White balance makes it tough to really see what's really there.
You'd be surprised. It is not uncommon for PCGS to up-grade older coins in the original ICG slabs. Typically, the original ICG was on a par with NGC and PCGS when it came to grading older coins. It was only with moderns that they (ICG) lost touch with reality. So yeah, I would expect PCGS to grade that 63.
I just had a coin I decided to play with. The results were actually kind of interesting. I bought an older gold holder PCI 1852 MS62 Gold dollar on ebay (i know the gold holders are not trusty worthy). In that case I bought the coin not the slab. I cracked the coin out and sent it to ICG. It came back MS61. I figured what the heck let me send it with my next PCGS submission as a crossover. It came back MS61 also. ICG is not the horrible company everyone seems to think. I also do not think ICG is so far out of touch when it comes to modern coins. I think it is PCGS that intentionally keeps the populations smaller for marketing. They try to add rarity to coins where none exists.
:thumb:Nice 1875-S trade dollar regardless who grade it! I really don't thing a TPG matters. unless you have 1841-O $10 liberty Gold to sell or a 1795 bust dollar or something of that caliber to sell MS-60+ then get regraded Pcgs or Ngc!
Hey Brian! IMO I think it would come back a 61 or so but if I were to buy that coin, I wouldnt pay an MS63 price. For ICG id knock off a number or so and pay a MS60 price
I disagree strongly. I sell slabbed coins and ICG coins do way, way worse in the marketplace than the "big 3." That's not a knock on ICG grading standards, it's just facing reality. Of course, buy the coin, not the slab
Yep I agree with you completely scott ICG coins do bring a fraction of the prices the big 3 do. That just means better deals for the rest of us lol. Its always a good idea to buy the coin not the slab. PCGS website says they have 44 warranty claims in the last 30 days with a value of $35,493. Everyone makes mistakes
I agree... you'd be surprised. Truly, one never knows. Bring your expertise to the table, grade the coin, and ignore the slab. I assure you, nice coins are found in ICG and SEGS slabs every day. The best part is they trade at a discount. But be careful when expecting a good grade on crossover. TPGs are like a box of chocolates - you never know what you're gonna get !
