Welcome to coin talk, I have seen several different errors but that is the first time I've seen one like that. Looks like it may have struck through something but it is puzzling to me. Maybe some one here has seen this.

Lathe lines. Someone forgot to polish the lines off the die before they put it into production.

thanks so much for the info. does that mean it is basically worthless?

I'd keep it regardless of whether it has added value or not. You don't see them too often and may carry a premium to the right collector.

Someone somewhere may buy But it has to Be graded and detailed a striking error
If the coin was still in a mint set sealed you may $40-50.00 but to have it grade you going to spend $45.00 if you send it to Ngc or Pcgs.but you could get graded by Anacs for $10.00 but you have to get 10 coins to get that fee.here an ad for a blank planchet hex its only $39.95.I am 90% sure seller found full bag1000pc and got a deal from Ngc as me or you would not get.

thanks for the link. it was very helpful. yes it is a keeper, mint condition. the nicest one i saw that was submitted for the die variety- lathe lines, on that website.

Thanks! It is a die break; I included it along with the gouge in the C of CENT as die markers.

Have you put it in an old record player yet to see what kind of music is on it?

1960 nickle.jpg changing the subject, i know you coin guys like to see pics of error coins. check out this 1960 nickle. the nose and forehead are doubled. there is more doubling on the obv but you can't see in this pic. on the reverse the dome and step is doubled also some letters in the e pluribus unum, monticello and United States of America. not a real good grade, but cool.
