I used to work at a bank and I got the 2 buffalo nickels from someone that was there, and the penny I got from someone I work with who said "I was just gonna spend it you can have it" What do you think they are worth?
Can't really comment on the value, but the left buffalo in the pics looks to potentially be a 1913 Type I.
my book shows ms60 at $2.00. i would be interested in it at that price if you want to sell it.. tom k
Nice finds!! Congrats!!! If you can read this send me a private message, and you will get a free coin.
My dealer sells dateless buffs for thirty cents each, and the plated '43 Lincoln should go for about fifty cents at the local flea market (that's what I sell 'em for anyway).
Yea I would totally agree that buff looks like a Type I. I had a dateless that looked almost exactly like it but with less wear on the reverse that turned out to be a Type I. Good find on that one.
It's a common practice to replate 1943 cents to make them look shinny. A lot of those sets you buy from gift or souvenir shops with really shinny steel cents have been replated.
Sure is nice to see someone find stuff in all of today's coins with presidents on them. I'm old enough to remember getting buffalo nickels, mercury dimes, walking liberty halved in change. It sure is nice to see when one pops up on occasion.
Yes, it's a steel cent... BUT it's been plated. Plated '43's are almost as common as their unplated counterparts. The ones that are plated have this super shiney look to them, and are usually sold as novelties.
yah it is very shiny. I figured it might have been plated or silver, but I didn't think they made them in silver back then since they were steel for a time. I can say its almost perfect. I think she put a few marks on the sides from when she had it in her purse and it hit something like her keys. Bur for free I'll take it. And sorry not looking to sell I would sell some of my more expensive stuff but even though it was free I don't need 2 bucks that bad Now I would sell something for a hundred haha. and thanks for the info on the buffalo nickles! What does a type 2 look like then if I may ask?
Just like the other buffalo you have. The type I has the buffalo on a slight hill and the bottom part under him is raised...hence why it is totally worn down smooth. The type II has the buffalo on flat ground and under neath is recessed into the coin, hence you can still see the edge and five cents on your other one.
As stated above, the Type 1 has the buffalo on a "mound", whereas the Type 2 has a definitive straight line and less of a mound:
Nice finds I have never found a 1943 cent anywhere before! I see what you did there! I didn't know that a lot of them were plated! I have a set of them that look really shiny, I'll bet those were plated as well!
