I just found this in the lot I bought last week. I know very little about these coins. I realize it has seen better days but it was a nice find. I never would have expected to find something like this in a lot purchased from Ebay! Can anyone fill me in on it? I'm having a blast going thru the lot.

    Thanks
    Mark

It looks like it is from 1786, I see ones in better condition on eBay going for between 5 and 15 dollars.

I got mine for 10. Its in pretty good shape and its a 1790. Cool coins IMO and great value for the age.

still nice coins though barry, i suppose it is because of the more ready supply that we get from our former colonies,

A lot of eBay sellers misrepresent these as being Dutch West Indies coins that were used in New York and call them New York pennies. These were for the Dutch EAST Indies, the area we today call Indonesia. New York was at one time part of the Dutch West Indies but they were gone from New York by the 1690's and the Dutch West Indies became just their possessions in the Caribbean. these coins never had any connection with New York.

Thanks Conder, I was curious as to why some call them "New York" pennies.

I love getting old coins for cheap. A while ago I got some mid-18th century British pennies and half pennies for pretty cheap, they're great. And I just bought some of those big copper Russian 2 Kopeks. Those don't cost much either.
Just a few tips if you're looking for cheap old coins.
You'd never find even a cull US coin from that era in the same price range.
