Hey everbody I had just purchased a 2012 Us coin book and was instantly interested in the Us 2 and 3 cent pieces manly the 1851-1873 3 cent pieces and I was wondering if you guys had some advice on collecting them?
Not sure about the 3 cent pieces and not sure what grade you are looking at. The 1872 2 cent piece and the 1864 small motto can be expensive. I only have a few in the collection for now, but hope to add more as I go. Not sure what I will do about 1872. I really like the design on them and really like brown better than the red-browns.
Wow that's quite a nice collection! I agree with you that the brown is nicer then the redish brown and the lettering on the 1871 is very intact and easy to read thanks for sharing! Do you know where I could get more info on these?
Those are beautiful, Mark! Nice. I don't collect 2c pieces but I have a few. This one is going on ebay tonight. It's been in my possession for a few years and I haven't messed with it. But I have my suspicions about the color so I've never submitted it for slabbing. Lance.
Try this http://kevinjflynn.com/coinsnbooks_books.html and I have heard "The Two Cent Piece And Varieties" by Myron M. Kliman is pretty good. Nice coin Lance and I agree about the color. Just can't say for sure.
We did a segment on episode 15 of The Coin Show about 2 cent pieces and collecting them. You can find it (and other episodes) here: http://coinshowradio.com/Listen_to_the_show_.html
I hope I'm not breaking any rules here. It's not my intent. It's on ebay now. My seller ID is kattman-gsxr. Cheers, Lance.
The three cent silver is a nice set and has some low mintages before 1863 After 1862 few of the business strike coins were ever released for circulation so they tend to be expensive.
Lance, What kind of money should this coin bring? The auction is too young to get a feel for where it might end up. That would look great in my 7070, so I 'watched' it... but I am curious where you think it might end up, so I know if it's in the budget 'ballpark'. I am curious what the best year(s) would be to look for a type for the 7070. ??? That way I can get the best eye appeal for the money.
1864 Large Motto or 1865 - the later the date the lower the mintage. And yes I got that from listening to the show. At the same time those seem to be the cheapest for high grade coins. And don't be shy about buying a graded one and cracking it out. Just my humble opinion.
Yeah I was in northern califronia and have to go allllllll the way back south so i guess you'll just have to see them tomorrow
Nice coin. I would say VG-8(can't see we at all) - the pictures are small and too hard to see the coin. Easy for me to say, but larger and clearer pictures would help. Looks like a little verdigris on the coin. Hopefully just dirt.
