Hello everyone, I'm new to the coin collecting thingy and to this forum. I was looking thru my pocket change the other day and noticed this mark on the obverse side of the quarter. It doesn't look like a PMD to me (but I have been known to be wrong) It doesn't look like a die clash either. I was wondering if you could take a look and give me your thoughts on it. Sorry ahead of time for the picture. I had to shoot it through a 45x microscope.
Welcome to the neighborhood! It looks like "Christ on the Cross" to me. Did you take it from the collection plate this morning? J/K! All kidding aside, it's too hard to tell from your photo what it could be. Does it appear to be raised above the surface of the field or is it recessed (incused) into the field? If it is recessed, it could be a strikethrough. If it is raised, it's possible the die had a gouge in it. Chris
Yea, Sorry about the pic. I'm trying to get a better one. But it looks like it is recessed into it. You can see it goes thru the G and O and faintly on the T
I'm guessing that it is post mint damage of some kind. If it is recessed, a strikethrough would not affect the raised letters because that is the deepest recess of the die. Here is an example of a strikethrough across the "O" of ONE CENT on a Lincoln. The center of the "O" is the same height as the field, and note that the letter, itself, is not affected by the strikethrough. Chris
From the 2nd photo, I'm almost positive it is PMD. Notice how the metal appears to be pushed upward (crater effect) to the right of the mark. If it had been a strikethrough, it wouldn't happen because the face of the die would force it to be flush in the field. Chris
I've got the same quarter it looks like a very bad die problem on it the backs die is very messed up I don't know nothing about coins im learning so I don't know how to describe how it looks that good its the 2004 Michigan quarter can any one help me?
