Which photos do you think are better? The quality on the scanner/printer is 600dpi. The webcam quality is 1.3mp or 640 by 480, I think.

Just a scanner and a webcam just wondering which is better. I'll try and post some more pics. I tryed to earlier but the cointalk "manage attachments" didn't upload one of my pics

You should crop all the background out of your scan.... every scanner has a basic editing package.

I don't think I have an editing package. I think it is lost somewhere.

Go for both to give the best idea about the coin. If you got to choose one, use scanner (or spend much more time and shots to take a proper webcam photo, looks like its possible but needs more effort, better angle, better lighting).

Stick with the scanner for now, your photos are too blurry. Also, you can upload your images to one of the free image hosting sites (such as PhotoBucket)... they have editing capabilities. And it becomes easier to insert a picture, as you just copy the proper code and pop it into your post.

    The American prospector coin

I cropped the American prospector coin that was scanned.

The scanner looks much better Alex. I usually get good results scanning coins with the exception of counterstamps. I always photograph counterstamps. Because of the difficulty of controlling the lighting the stamp always looks raised and the rest of the coin incuse. As far as currency goes, scanning is better by far.

Thanks everyone for the help! My webcam used in the photos broke yesterday and I wanted to see if everyone agreed that the scanner is better.

    Scanner type

If you are wondering what printer/scanner I'm using is the Epson Stylus CX4450. The printer isn't working. I think it's because there is no ink, but I'll only use the scanner.

I think in time you will find that a digital camera will out preform both.

I have some digital cameras but they are not good with "up close pictures."
