I'm relatively new to this board, but far from new to collecting  I almost exclusively collect halves, mostly barber and walkers.

For those who have collected halves, what do you think is the best route? I try to aim for F or better on barbers and XF on walkers. I tend to buy 1 piece a month based on price.

What are your collecting habits regarding halves? [IMG]

Id love to be able to buy walkers, I just dont have a place to buy them. So for now, I have two books for the current kennedy halves that im working on to keep my mind of other kind of halves.

    Welcome to CT!

I collecet alot of halves, first before you say anything,, i love the Kennedy halves, i know not very valuble, but still love them, i have at least one of every year and mint, from 1964 P & D thru the 40% to 1971 all mints (BU) up to 2011PDS. Including the 1992s 90% silver up to 2011s silver. I have a handfull of the others, bust, LS, Barber, Walking, Franklin. Tha prices are getting higher due to silver prices, of course... It all depends on how much your willing to spend!! Personally i've collected the key dates in as low as just good condition, Any better grades i can't afford right now. Do you have any key dates? like 1915P or 1897o or s 1914P. The best half i have is the 1834 bust in UNC..

I try and buy as many bu or hi AU walkers as I can find for around melt value. Obviously these would be the more common 40's ones.

    Interesting.

I mainly focus my attention on 1 piece a month. The better grade barbers are pretty hard to find. My favorites are the earlier Barbers and Earlier Walking Halves.

favorite so far is my nicely toned XF 1938 D walkers, and XF 1914 half.

You nailed it with the Barbers (halves, quarters, and dimes), XF or greater get pretty darn pricey. I have only one Barber Half(AU), 1 MS Barber quarter, and 1 UNC dime because of the prices. By the way, the Walking Liberty half is my absolute favorite U.S. design. You made a good choice!

when i usually buy halves im looking for toned pieces. ive got 3 walkers and 3 capped bust. finding a good toned barber seems too pricey and since i already have a undipped greyish ms barber quarter i gave looking for a half up. when i goto chicago now i write a list of coins posted on their website and theres usually a decent selection of pcgs ms65 walkers / ms64 morgans under the 200$ price range.

I have a couple of second book circulated Walkers. I need 6 more Walkers ( the usual hard ones) to finish the first book.

I started collecting Kennedy's when I was younger just by walking into the bank with a list and asking
the teller for the ones not checked off!

I like high graded Franklins MS65/66 ,MS 65/66 FBL ,NGC or PCGS, and rolls unc+ of 1964 Kennedy's
The Kennedy's are a a long turn hedge on inflation. The Franklins are for enjoyment and investment also, but more as my hobby.
