I know you should never get caught up in auctions, but do you ever notice a great little auction you get so wound up with the idea of getting you almost get ill not winning it? I mean, one you put a good bid in, look at it for days, and then lose it with the winning price being 100x what is was going for, and just one bid over yours? That ONE other guy not only raised the price up, but actually lost you the auction.

I am usually pretty good at just sniping at auctions, and if I win I win, if not there are other coins. This last one just got to me, since it was a large group of coins I really like, and I thought the final price would have been no where near what I bid.

Maybe I need to stop Ebaying for a bit. :)

Ya win some and ya lose some....the story of life itself, I'm sure you will come back around to win a good sale soon.

    I lost a $60 auction by a $0.01 once...I was steaming pretty bad after that one :)

Sometimes its not one bid over yours, it just looks like it. There could have been 10 other guys who attempted to bid on your item on the last second but their bids did not go through because the current bid was already higher than theirs, so it didn't even register.

I know man, just venting. I normally snipe, but placed a large bid. It was at $44 most of the week, I bid $523, and lost it to one other bidder by a bid increment. Yeah, maybe he bid $10,000, but it just felt I HAD those coins already, you know what I mean?

Don't know why this one got to me, I place 50 snipes a week normally, and only catch a few. This group was just so perfect for me.........

I have found that in most of those cases I was bidding too much anyway. In the long run most of the time it was a good loss.

    Chris,

If, as you say, you place as many as 50 snipe bids a week and only win a few of them, it suggests to me that you are underbidding most of them hoping to catch someone asleep at the "Submit" button.

I used Bidnapper for 2 years, and I would routinely bid in 2-3 dozen auctions at a time. I would enter bids for what I thought would be a fair price to pay for each item. I finally had to quit using Bidnapper because I was winning 85% of the auctions and was spending way too much money.

    Chris, too!

I feel your pain. If it makes you feel any better there was a seller this week with around 30 coins of the type I collect. I missed the first four, where one of his coins sold for less them 1/5 of it's value so I was totally sure I would win a couple. Ended up being the under bid on three of them as I guess some other people finally noticed the coins too :(

You should be checking "EBAY WATCH COUNT" to see how many other people have viewed the listing. If dozens of people have viewed a particular listing but only a small handful have placed bids, it is safe to assume that some snipe bids will be placed.

I have a lot of items in my watch list daily. But I never show my hand by placing a bid early, because usually others bid the price up fast enough! I have won many items by bidding in the last 20 seconds or less, because that really gives me a good idea of what other bidders may have already in for their maximum bid. So I try to out-guess them by a couple $ & odd cents ;)

it could have been a shill bidder, bidding you up. It happens more often then ppl think. Just very hard to prove.

It wouldn't surprise me if you got a second chance offer on the lot.

I guess maybe if you are always trying to catch someone napping then snipe bidding is okay. Honestly I determin what I will bid, place the bid then forget about it. If I win great, if I didn't then the other person over paid. I use to place one or two low bids on some coins - then really bid on the ones I truly wanted. I don't even do that anymore. Just too hard to find something that interests me on ebay especially the last 3/4 months.

Boy that is the truth. I am finding more and more ancient coins going for much higher than equivalent coins go for on CNG. I simply cannot believe the prices many are going nowadays. I still buy some stuff, but less and less everyday from Ebay, and more from sites like CNG.

Bidnapper, Auctionsniper, man I have a lot to learn. You guys seem like pros to me. I bid on other auctions and ebay too.
I've made bad mistakes bidding but learning all the while. When I bid at an auction that has buyers and shipping fees I
subtract them from my highest bid so I don't go over what I think the coin/s or currency are worth to me. Man I've come close but no cigar. I have won where I've either misread or paid too much and will never recover what I spent.
But I keep trying regardless. Some day I'll win one that will fill my folders or make me a profit, I hope.

It's happened to me a bunch of times. Generally I have to stop ebaying for a bit and then come back to it. I beleive in the proverb all things come to those who wait. Many times I've found the items I lost in being overbid in ebay auctions in other venues, or on ebay at another time and spent WAY less than I would have.
