While working on attributing my bag of 72 lincoln cents, I kept checking through all the coins that had a cud near Liberty to no avail.... I began researching the die markers and remembered seeing a cent that had die scratches around the memorial, scratches between the A and T in states, and 3 parallel scratches under the N in United-not to mention a gouge in the N. At the time I had only heard of the late die stage with the cuds near Liberty and my coin didn't fit-but the pattern of doubling on IGWT, 1972, and the L in Liberty did !! After further exploring Wexler's page on 72 DDO 004, I am 100% sure this is an early die stage, but I know nothing about the production number and values of the early die stages. I'd really appreciate a helping hand on my exciting find ! I will post full obverse and reverse pics shortly :b8nce:
I would say the value is relatively negligible (Sub $10) even if it's a fairly rare find because this is a minor DD in a year with a couple major DD's. Extremely niche market, even more so than most DD coins. Takes more than rarity to drive prices, you gotta have at least two people that want it. Still a cool find. I'd slap it in a 2x2 and hold onto it.
I may be wrong, but the last time I checked, the WDDO-004 is the major one for the year because of its rarity. I know the DDO 001 has a wider spread, but the value is actually lower than the 004 dur to the amount of them out there. I've checked this on wexler's site http://www.doubleddie.com/388722.html , Ken Potter's books (i.e. Strike It Rich with Pocket Change) , and other sites and forums. One of these in brown in a higher grade sold for $2,100 March 20, 2011.
I think I need to clarify that I am not under the belief that this is a high-dollar coin just because one of the same variety recently sold for a high amount... My original intent was to get more info on the early die state vs. the later die states with the rim cud. There is very little info out there regarding the EDS and I'm looking for further info. This was found in another roll from my store, and was the only #4 out of all of the 72 varieties I have. It was a pretty unexpected find due to the rarity, so I'm a happy camper no matter what the value!
You might indeed have found a really good one there Andyluw. Here's another place to compare yours to.http://www.coppercoins.com/lincoln/diestate.php?date=1972&die_id=1972p1do004&die_state=eds
Thanks d.t.menace, that one looks a heck of a lot like mine too! I have no idea why, but that is one of my usual go-to sites and I never gave it a thought. I have several 1960 and 60D cents to attribute (got all 4 including sm/lg and lg/sm) when done with this series so I already got sidetracked looking them up lol! This one is heading off for grading next week along with a few others so I will be sure to post my results when it comes back. I have hoarded these coins for so long waiting to go through them, and now I am having an absolute blast seeing what's out there!
I consider everybody here to be experts in one thing or another so I'm not sure who's door specifically I should knock on so maybe I will sit a spell and enjoy the view lol. Honestly - I love reminding cherrypickers that these great coins are still there in change, because we all lose hope after a dry spell. I haven't found a single WAM or CAM (CLAM) but lots of great things keep popping up when I'm focused on something else :b8nce: Hope you all have similar luck this week!
Would anyone mind taking a stab at the grade for me? I've got an idea and want to know if I'm in the right ballpark lol.
Am I seeing discoloration around 'United', 'One Cent', and the Memorial, and if so, could it be verdigris, or do my eyes see something that isn't there? Certainly looks like some sort of discoloration.
Sorry for the long response time but I've had a horrible cell phone/internet signal the last few days. The coin is free from verdigris, but there is some darkening of the metal in some areas. It appears to be mostly from natural toning and not damage. All of my 72 cents come from circulated rolls that I get at the bank and grocery store, so I'm happy to find it in this good of shape-happy to find it at all for that matter ! I'm not expecting a high grade and seeing dollar signs, but it really makes my day (year!) to continue to find the rarer dates and varieties in local rolls. Everyday is a treasure hunt! :b8nce: :b8nce:
Nope I had actually missed that one so thank you! There is still so little out there on the earlier die state without the cuds like mine. Does anyone know if the late die state is more sought after or if there was a higher production number of one than the other?
I have one very similar. I can see those cuds left from liberty but I can't tell much about it, any help will be appreciated. Thank ks.
