I bought this coin a couple weeks ago. I want your opinion on the grade because I felt it was undergraded. This coin has the absolute best luster I have ever seen on a Barber Dime. It is currently graded NGC MS. I won't give the actual grade now because I want an opinion uninfluenced by NGC. Also, what sort of premium would the color bring, if any?
I'm guessing it is a 63, but with the toning, depending on how attractive or unattractive the TPG found it to be, it may be a 64 or it maybe be a 62... It's hard to say. Those spots within the wreath on the reverse are what have me a bit worried though (It's not in an 'MS-Details' holder is it?). Personally, I find the blue and orange hues attractive. If I were interested in purchasing the coin, I may pay a small premium. But, then again, I'm more of a 'blast white' kind of guy. -Brian
I'm an old guy, so I don't know much about modern grading. What I do know, this coin is a beauty... and I would pay a premium.
The original thread creator stated "It is currently graded NGC MS". So, unless he's lying, which I do not believe he is, it isn't in an 'AU58' holder. -Brian
I can't -- at all -- judge luster from photos. That said, it appears as if there may be some slight luster impact on the fields and high points. Which, to me, suggest a grade anywhere between high-AU (55/58) and low MS (63/64). Need better pics or in-hand assessment to zero in on the grade. You have, however, given us the grade as MS, so if forced to guess, I'll guess 64. Regardless of grade, I find the coin quite attractive and desirable. I'd love to own it. IMO, of course.
It's a 65. I thought the the luster would bring it to at least a 66 but it sounds like it is a low 65...
Wow! That's a 65?! ... Man, that really shows how the standards have changed. With the actual "wear" on the coin, if it did not have the toning, it is probably a true 62 or 63. But 65? I just don't see it. DON'T GET ME WRONG, it's an attractive piece either way. -Brian
i was gonna say 65 but my guess is too late. nice piece. i dont see why it would come off as a 63 and i think the color is amazing. ive got a 1896 morgan with that same rainbow effect.
I was too late, but I would have graded it 66. The toning is attractive and should bring a premium. I would consider cracking it out and sending it to PCGS. This coin deserves better than a 65 IMHO
For those who see "wear" or other spots that would deflate the grade, could you specifically say where they are? Just so I can look for it too. Thanks- Mike
seeing wear in an internet photo vs. NCG seeing the coin in hand... I would give NGC the benefit of doubt
