Bill would stop production of Presidential dollars

In a time where the gov't is looking near and far to save money, I don't understand why they just don't get it over with and eliminate the darn $1 bill and get it over with. People complain about the extra space a coin takes up versus a bill, and it's not as convenient. Well, I think the real problem is people are afraid of change. The dollar bill doesn't buy squat anymore, and most people use debit/ credit cards for transactions these days anyway. Raising the debt ceiling, and finding ways to balance our budget are more difficult and complex decisions to make, this is just common sense one would think!!!

This can't be the only example of Congress attacking a problem by getting rid of the solution...

My thoughts exactly. For all the talks of budget cuts here, thrifty spending there, no more space program, etc. it seems like common sense to see this dollar coin program through to completion and let it save the country money as it was intended to do. Then, let's up the ante and switch to polymer notes ;)

Good point. I wish my job entailed days upon days of debate, with nothing for an end product, with great wages and benefits (not to mention lobbyist cash and comps from lots of great places to vacation) to top it off.

I agree with most everything you said, except for this. When I was looking to save money, I would do things like mow my own lawn, wash my own car, eat at home, do my own car repairs, etcetera etcetera.
I will think the congresscritters and the shmenators, and the executive branch, and the supremes are serious about austerity when they make some personal sacrifices before they ask anyone else for sacrifices. I am not holding my breath waiting.

I'm sure the Spouse Program makes money... I predict we'll be making at least enough Pres. Dollars for collectors up through Ford.

I completely agree with you, sir. Most Americans (including myself) took considerable wage cuts in recent years. I don't see any elected officials creating a bill calling for across the board wage cuts for senators and congressman. Anyway... back to coins! This country could benefit financially by eliminating the dollar bill, cent coin, and adjusting the composition/ size of the five cent coin we call the nickel. Canada is batting .667 on these recommendation, and their cent is copper plated steel, which is considerably cheaper than our copper-zinc cents.

How do you buy stamps without going to the post office? I've seen websites for it but I always figure there's some sign-up process I really don't want to go through.

Just hold onto those Presidential Dollars b/c if they're stopping production, it'll be even more of an investment for your children. I have a love/hate relationship when they cease production of coins b/c it only makes what you have more valuable! History is made every day. Remember that.

You can buy stamps at most chain food stores and sometimes right at their registers. I think Doug21 was just pointing out that many people use the internet to send messages instead of letters and also use electronic banking for their bills.

Sorry about raining on your parade, but they might not increase all that much unless there's a huge melt. The trouble with coins rejected by the public is that they don't circulate; they don't get worn down. There'll be a whole bunch of uncirculateds floating around unless the government takes them back in and melts them.

The feds tried the same thing more than 30 years ago with the Susan B. Anthony dollar coin. That too was rejected, and it was discontinued in the early 1980s. If I recall correctly, the Anthonies didn't appreciate that much.

    Good.

Both series need to end. One for a little while. One forever.

I would be fine either way it goes, a discontinued series would be cool, while a collectors only series would also be. The first spouse coins need to go, I do not like them at all, they have huge premiums and I am not buying them from the mint anytime soon, their goal is unknown to me and I think they are ridiculous, who needs more different gold coins, especially when there are only a few made so far.

u.s. mint end direct $1.00 coin order. must use money order, check and other accepted form of payment except credit and debit card. no more 1 % rebate. but then all the direct dollar coin program for presidential rolls were sold out. only 2011 sacagawea roll left. maybe the mint is too late.

The President will never sign a bill eliminating a coin of himself.

Truly this is a non-starter, designed as an affront to Obama. No one seriously thinks this has a chance of happening, do they? The mint lost 25% of it's customers in the past year. They don't want to risk another 25% because a key series vaporizes. The Presidential Dollars, like them or not, are an important long lasting element in coin history here now. Lots of folks have positions, or holdings, in the thousands of dollars. Stopping production might even be met with legal action by some to continue, as stopping the strikes would be breach in the minds of some legal scholars. Surely there are many fans of these, me among them. I wanna see them continue. The Lincoln was awesome, and I cannot wait for Jackie O. Wowee. Now if Biden's wife could become a first spouse, then that'd be a GOOD, GOOD thing for a coin!
