I finally received my flaming box from Iceland! I got some REALLY great stuff! I only took a couple photos so far. I will be adding to this thread as I take them. I am now OFFICALLY a serious collector of Icelandic coins. I have a COMPLETE Kingdom Era set!!!!!! Also, an "81" proof set, a 2000 proof set, and a "46-80" proof set. There is LOTS of great coins in this box!:u*meY: Thanks My Friend!!!! :thumb:
I am not familiar, nor knowledgable, about foreign coins...not at all. Though, I do know they are more artistic. That coin on the bottom just goes to prove that, yes, the U.S. needs to make our coinage more like works of art....just like that bottom coin. If that doesn't look like a medal......man, that is gorgeous! Hope the rest is just as nice!!!
Don't think these are coins; maybe that is why they look like medals. Very nice though. Landsbanki had, for many years, the function of a central bank and issued notes. (Later it was privatized, and then was badly affected by the economic crisis.) That is why the piece refers to 100 years of issuing bank notes. The actual coin, so to say, is in this topic: http://www.cointalk.com/t187478/#post1229223 The second piece, with the four animals from the country's CoA, sure has a lot of depth. But hardly any collector coins - and certainly no circulation coins - look like that ... Christian
That bottom coin/medal is pretty amazing what with the dragons and mythical bull. What's on the other side? Measurements? Looking forward to viewing other images in this group of coins/medals. I look for Icelandic coins/medals at coin shows but haven't found anything like this.
Everyone is correct, both of the above photos are commerative medals. The second one is HUGE! I don't know the exact dimensions but it is about 3" in diameter and quite heavy. If Siggi chimes in he will be able to give the details on both of these. Numismania, I was a collector of ONLY US coins for a long time. I really got bored with them. I look at coins with different eyes now. It isn't always about how much they are worth. I'm more interested in the artistic and historic value now. There are some beautiful coins/medals out there and here are 2 of them. Thanks for your input!
They're some beautiful medals Mark. Siggi was very good to you. Although I love most of the Icelandic issues you've shown us, you haven't turned me to the dark side yet...but keep trying. I'm looking forward to seeing the rest of them. Bruce
As Mark said, These are medals not coins. The top one was minted to celebrate the 100 years of Icelandic notes. The bottom one was made in 1974 in celebration of the 1100th years from the first settlement of Iceland. It was also minted in silver - 300 grams of 0.925 silver. I´m glad you are having fun Mark that´s what it´s all about Bruce buddy your next LOL Siggi
Alright Siggi, I'll start collecting Icelandic coins, but...............only if they're counterstamped. Bruce
My Friend I couldn't be much happier! I will be posting more photos tomorrow for sure. We were just to busy the past couple of days. It would have taken me a couple of years or more to put a collection like this together. It was worth every bit of the waiting and worrying. As for Bruce, let me finish my collection first! I don't need anymore competition when him and I go to coin shows together and the show in Philadelphia is just a few weeks away now, LOL!
ABSOLUTELY LOVE the bottom medal. The Phoenix is one of my favorite mythical creatures. I even named my Xbox LIVE name after it.
That bottom medal makes me want to start collecting medals I like how it's encused. I think thats the right word.
Yes, I checked it out moneyer thanks! I need to start saving some cash for the Philadelphia show next month. If I can't find one there at a decent price I'll pick one up somewhere. Thank you so VERY much for looking out for me!
