buy a slabbed AG3... pretty cheap for the coin (cheapest i've seen slabbed is $550), and guaranteed authentic.

Good luck finding one for under $100, because you won't. Like stated above, I'd go for a Slabbed AG-3. With AG-3, you know what coin it is without it being completely rubbed flat. You can get one in AG-3 in the range of $450 to $850, depending on who's selling it. You'll see AG-3 examples with a asking price of $1,000, and you'll see them for $500. Again, it depends on who's selling it. I've been considering one for a while, just been busy with my summer break. Plus, there's only one dealer who does deal with big ticket stuff, but he's on Maui. And I only visit Maui when I go visit my Aunt, which is once every 3 months.

How low can you go on slabbed genuines -- dug, scrubbed, P01?

I don't think you will find anything that resembles an 1877 for under $100.

The cheapest 1877 IHC I could find on eBay completed auctions was this one. Talk about ugly! Huge gash across the obverse. But for $139.17 what do you expect? Is that a Weak N on the reverse? Ya know, I just can't say for sure.

If $139.17 is too rich for your blood perhaps you would rather take a gamble on this coin for $15.50 (plus $4.95 S/H). Use your imagination to see the last 7 in the date.

Cheap and 1877 IHC aren't usually used in the same sentence. You can find an slabbed AG-3 example for under $500. ONce you jump up to G-4 you're looking at $700-850. For my money, if I was going to pay that, I'd jump up to VG8 which can be had for around $1000. Here's one on eBay right now: slabbed NGC VG8, no problem coin for $1050 BIN.

There you have it: with the simple click of a mouse, you could have your key date/centerpiece of a nice circulated Indian Head Cent collection for around a grand.
