Wide and Close AM LMC varieties worth the price?

I'm getting close to finishing the LMC series and I am trying to decide which varieties to include. The big decision maker is if to worry about the wide and close AM varieties. I looked on ebay and some of those things are darn expensive; considering to focus on another set for some of those prices! Thoughts and opinions on ease of acquisition and price would be appreciated.

The 98. 99, 00 WAM's are fairly easy, the 99 will set you back a few $$$. You can pretty much forget about the 92 CLAMS, not only are they very rare, they are very expensive if you can even find one.

Does that statement hold true for the proofs and isn't there a '96 example as well?

Please excuse my ignorance, but if I dont ask, I will never know..... in regards to a wide "AM"... are you talking about a 1992 memorial penny or another type of coin ??
If so I would be curious what they are going for as I have one of those, Thanks in advance

I always have to look to remind myself as to which was the exception, but I do know (at least I think I know) that there are wide and close varieties for '92, '96, '98, '99, '00. Some only on P's, some both P and D, others on proofs...like I said I always have to have a running list (which I don't have immediately available) to know which I'm looking for.

If you feel they are not worth the price then you have answered your own question.

The idea is to collect what you like and have fun with.

    Agree.

If considering any of the Wide AM's or Close AM's, FIRST try to find some yourself by searching countless rolls of Lincolns. When you get bored with that, then consider buying some if you think you really want them.

I'm of the opinion that a lot of these "popular" varieties usually end up in the toilet IF, more are found and the populations increase, OR if folks just lose interest.

If either of the two conditions are met, any money invested immediately turns into a very "long term" investment which quite possible could extend beyond your physical lifetime.

Keep reminding yourself that at one point in time, 1950-D Nickels could set you back $75!

Here's your order from most rare to least rare.

    1996 WAM (1 known)
    1992 CAM (3-4 known)
    1992-D CAM (30-40 known)
    1999 WAM (~400 known)
    1998 WAM (Lots)
    2000 WAM (Lots)

These numbers are the most updated numbers I know of.

I personally don't own any of the CAM's, or the 1996 obviously, have two 1999's (One MS63, the other prob XF), a dozen 1998's, and probably about 15 2000's. This is after going through something like $3k+ in cents.

We would love to see pictures of your '92. The wide 92 is normal. It's the close 92 that is worth thousands.

I will "dig" them out and post later, I have the wide as well as the close, I thought the wide was the rarer of the two.... but will post the pictures a little later on today, thanks !! Ron

If you have a 92 or 92-D close AM, you hit the jackpot. They are extremely rare.

I guess you didn't hear all the controversy over this coin? I love Billy and consider him a friend, but this coin has been disavowed by everyone.

I think in order to complete the set, you do need the transition coins. The 92 & 92 D CAM, the WAMS and the 88 & 88 D Reverse 89. Most collectors must pass on some of these of course. The 92 CAM has only been found from a single die and just a couple have been authenticated. The 88 D reverse 89 seems to be very scarce, although 7 dies have been identified, still scarce with fewer than a dozen coins known.

Seriously, it depends entirely on how far you want to take your collection and how much you are willing to spend on it. The scarcest coins like the 92 CAM was found in circulation so I have heard, and I found an 88 D RDV 006 roll searching. For some of us, the thrill is in the hunt.
But only you can determine your parameters. I will not be satisfied until I have a completed set of the LMC including all of the transition coins and proofs. So it is likely never to be completed, it will always be a work in progress. If you decide to not collect some of the set, you can finish it at any point and put it to bed. That's entirely up to you.

    Good luck with it,

    gary

I have heard the controversy, but I remain sitting on the fence. Do I "think" it exists? No. Will I keep looking for one? Sure, why not, only takes a half second a coin to look...

Unless, of course, he's come clean and admitted he was messing around.
