Sad to say this is the best coin in my collection other than a $5 gold coin I have... But I got this coin today... It's my first Carson City!

    It's worth Spot Price?

I'm new to collecting but I don't think CC's are worth only Spot...

    Numismania You hockey puck!!

Read up some, and learn to grade. Even though it's $35, one day, you may wind up paying that 'tuition' many of us have paid. Learn from others mistakes...but grab yourself some books....don't just buy without knowing what you are really buying.

I'm confused now. So it was a bad buy? I've never paid more than 35 for a Morgan here in New York... The prices are crazy here. I have 5 Morgans Total. This is my only Carson City... So what did I do wrong on this buy?

    Nice 91 CC.
I think your coin is in the XF-AU range as far as grade. Looks like original toning, doesn't appear to have been cleaned from the photos, a couple of slight rim dings. Assuming it's real, I'm guessing you could get $120-175 for that coin if you listed it on ebay. Check out the links below for ebay comps.

That coin is worth $100-$150 wholesale...dealer to dealer...

Claiming that it is worth melt is just plain incorrect.

I'm not a moprgan expert, to me they're just bullion.

What a great buy! Most coin collectors would know this worth well above the current melt value for Morgan silver dollars, $30.07.

Then maybe you shouldn't answer someones serious question about their coins collector value.

I agree, you shouldn't give someone incorrect advice just because you don't agree with the true value. People come to this forum to learn about all coins and their numismatic values.

Now that I know it's worth more than $100, how do I grade it? I found a site with pictures showing different grades and coins, but I know my coin has nicks on the rim which does make it lose value, The details are alright, but the breast feathers aren't that detailed. I know grading coins doesn't happen over night, and 1 person might grade a coin differently than others. I hope to learn more from you guys and I will also read around as well to try to educate myself.

I also picked up a 1899 S for 35 yesterday, should I start a new thread or throw it in this one? I know in better condition the price can change a bit unlike a 1980 I got as well which the price doesn't move as much as you go higher in grade.

I think you got a nice deal, this coin is probably worth between $120-$160.... And it's not in as bad condition as you think, I'm fairy sure that the black is toning.... I'd grade it as a Xf-45.

    Nice score!!!:thumb:

If it was cleaned then you need to fill me in!!! It looks so dirty to me.

Ok, this looks like an old cleaning, then someone simply let the coin sit and get this Black toning.

Look on the obverse, do you see the hairline scratches running across the face and around it?? That is my basis for thinking it was cleaned....
