This is an amazing medal. Of all the exonumia I have this is tops. The proof version as shown here is exclusive to GovMint/New York Mint. I am glad they offered this.
These are genuinely gorgeous pieces, regardless of the composition. I should have grabbed one while Talisman had them. I did NOT know PCGS holdered these. Kinda gives way to discussion as to whether they should also grade/holder SCD's, and, not to revisit an already discussed topic, but the D. Carr '64-D 'overstruck' fantasy Peace dollars. Regardless of all that, I don't want to de-rail the topic...and again, I think thats a gorgeous design, and a very nice piece. That should almost be required to have in any collection!
For you and me I don't think they will. For a large bulk submitter offering them extra money to do so, sure they will. Special labels, pieces slabbed that they say they don't slab etc can happen for certain people (even though they claim not to know who submits the pieces)
As long as PCGS isnt grading I dont see why they don't offer to slab anything simply if that person wants something labelled and protected.
Well this piece is offered through GovMint/New York Mint. They are Asset Marketing Services. They develope some cool coins such as this (developed through French Mint in an exclusive proof edition). But they are a $300 Million Company so that may help get things slabbed. They also get the Gem Proof non-number grade for their Smithsonian Union pattern medals which are nice.
Do you think that PCGS having an office in Paris, now, had anything to do with their acceptance of this medal? The ANA used the obverse of the Libertas Americana for their silver and bronze medals of the 1969 ANA Convention in Philadelphia. I was able to get the 3-medal sets, 1969-1982, graded by NGC, but apparently, they have reversed this policy and will not grade them any more. If this is true, it looks like I will have the only set of the ANA medals graded by NGC. The photo below was taken before they were submitted for grading. Chris
Actually that more closely resembles Frank Gasparro's obverse design for the small dollar (that was later dumped for SBA).
If you're referring to the ANA medal, you're right. Gasparro copied the design from Libertas Americana, and the NGC insert duly notes "Gasparro Fecit". Chris
Gasparro's design actually is closer to a cross between the Peace dollar and Joseph Wrights 1793 Liberty cap half cent. Wright took his inspiration from the Libertas Americana but there are significant differences. Well actually something of all three. The tiny Liberty Cap is more in keeping with the Libertas Americana than from the larger version used on the half cent.
**If this is true, it looks like I will have the only set of the ANA medals graded by NGC. The photo below was taken before they were submitted for grading.** They are truly stunning medals. Are any coins or medals available that use that design? **Actually that more closely resembles Frank Gasparro's obverse design for the small dollar (that was later dumped for SBA).** Whomever dumped that design for SBA will have to live with that horrendous decision until they push up daisies.
