Recently I purchased a 1959 Cinco Pesos silver coin of ebay, when I received I almost instantly had a bad feeling about it, I've been trying to do research on it but have been coming up empty, does anyone have information on this coin, the edge of the coin I received is flat with no lettering, thats what is disturbing me the most. Don't have access to a great scale at the moment so cant check it by weight. Please any help would be greatly appreciated, Ben
I don't know much about that coin. In the past year I've bought quite a few silver peso coins on eBay. I did notice that some sellers were selling 1959 white copper cinco peso coins. All of the silver peso coins that I bought have incuse writing on the edge of the silver coin.
From everything that I can find, the 1959 cinco peso will have a plain edge. 1959 Mo MEXICO SILVER 5 PESOS-BU 18.0500 g., 0.7200 Silver 0.4178 oz. ASW, 36 mm. Subject: Centennial of Carranza's Birth Obv: National arms, eagle left Rev: Head left Edge: Plain Note: Mint mark Mo. 1944 Un Peso and 1947 Cinco Peso is as close as I have.
Well I sent it in for a refund, blah, so the coin I had was probably a real one, the seller told me that the coin was supposed to have a reeded edge and to send it back........
As an ebay seller I just can't even respond to this without it being icky. It is your job to know your stuff.
I'm somewhat of an amateur, and I was under the impression that this coin had a reeded edge, and when the seller agreed with me, that's when I decided to send it back.
I would just suggest that you not let this learning experience get you down, because we have all made mistakes. It's what we learn from it and do about it in the future that's really important. I have enjoyed collecting coins for almost 40 years now. It's a wonderful hobby that can be very profitable. I just try to take my time and learn about a coin before jumping in and buying. There are a lot of really good people here at CT that are very knowledgeable. Many of them focus and specialize in learning about and collecting just one type of coin. Get to know some of them, because most all of them would be willing to help. Good luck to you. Chuck ps: Posting pictures is a great way to help them help you.
There was discussion on the recent wave of fake modern Mexican coins, 1959 Cinco Peso being one of them, over at http://www.coincommunity.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=93046
