Sorry for the less-than-stellar photos. My camera was acting up, so I had to use my cell phone. I got this for free a while back and never really thought much of it. I never really am good at grading coins. The only flaws are the hair around the ear is SLIGHTLY worn, as well as the chest of the eagle. The eagles chest is still visible in real life if looked at very closely. This coin doesn't appear to be cleaned, and it still has a nice tone in person (the camera doesn't show it. If it was cleaned, it was done very softly I suppose). I heard 1892 is a low mintage year for Philly, and I assume the value is in the grade. So help me out here, can I get an estimate on its worth? Is it not high enough grade to be worth more than the (high) silver melt value? I have it in a protective case now just to be safe. Should I get it graded or is it not worth it? Thanks guys! If you need I can try to get you better pictures.
Unfortunately, those images are too blurry to give any opinion on grade. If you can try and take some clearer ones, people could guess at it.
I agree with the other posting that the photo's aren't good enough to give a lot of information. However, I do see what appears to be signs of harsh cleaning. It has been circulated and probably cleaned. Also, the 1892 has a lower mintage...just over 1 million but is fairly common in lower grades. It doesn't become overly valuable until you get into the upper MS grades.
If you see cleaning, then it probably was done. But hey, can't complain about a free coin. I'll hang on to it and pass it on to my grand kids when I get old. Thanks
I could be wrong...the photos make it hard to tell. I can see what appear to be fine hairlines all over the obverse...which is a sign of cleaning. But, without better photos I can't tell for sure.
I would guess, from the pics and description, XF45-cleaned. I would say $55 would be a fair value. That is just my opinion, but I am no expert on Morgans. Still, that is pretty good for a free coin.
