I'm not talking about selling your collection and spending the profits. I'm talking about spending a piece of your collection. Nothing valuable. Maybe your a few bucks short, so you spend that beat up star note you got stashed. Or maybe a few wheaties or a buffalo, just because you have nothing else to spend. What got me thinking was strauchfx's recent post where he picked up an old-school $100 bill. It was in nice shape, but had a crease. If I had an extra $100 (yeah right) I might buy it and hang onto it, but if the rent was due, I would spend it in a heartbeat.
I think if I ever got to the point where I was having to spend a few cents or a nickel out of my collection, I'd first of all realize I shouldn't be collecting money if I didn't have any to spend, and then I'd get another job that allows me to not spend my collection. But, thats just what I'd do. Guy
I agree, if I had to spend some of my wheats or star notes or even silver certificates at face because I didn't have enough money for something, I think I could live without it. Now emergencies do come up and I wouldn't be opposed to selling some stuff to pay for it, but not spending it for face. I would sell other stuff before I started selling my collection though, that is just me.
No. I don't believe I have since I don't think they'll take slabs at the local grocery store. I've bought rolls of circulated Eisenhower Dollars, gone through them and then spent tham at face simply because it would cost me more than face to sell them.
Some people spend wheats, no date buffs, Ikes, and the like just for fun, and to see the look on people's faces. And to try to get new people into the hobby.
I've spent coins from my collection before and I suspect many people have or eventually will. When my desire to collect was rekindled after many years of disinterest I reviewed my collection and found items that I no longer felt I needed to save. Several bicentenial quarters, a couple old and ugly series 1957 silver certificates, and several circulated Eisenhower dollars were among the items that I had saved as a child that I felt, as an adult with a larger income to devote to collecting, I could now afford to part with at face value. It's a simple concept; many of the things that excited me as a child just don't impress me as an adult.
Yes haha, I had some Israeli coins from my collection that made it to my pocketchange... they weren't anything special so I'm not sure why I put them in my collection in the first place!
I just bought s ub from the party store next door with Ike dollars. I have hundreds of circulated ikes, kennedys, and prez gold dollars. Whenever I need some cash and the wife has my ATM card, I bust them out.
I guess maybe I am just sentimental. Most of my Kennedy's and silver certificates were given to me by either my grandfather or my wife's grandfather. Most are in pretty bad shape, the silver certs are only worth like $.15 over face, but I still like them. Now I do have a pretty good size hoard of post 1970's coins from roll searching and then just putting them in plastic tubes for the heck of it. Those I might spend. I don't know, I guess I just like having a bunch of stuff. Plus they may be worth something when they get passed on to my grandkids.
See you on Hoarders! Man, when I first started, I kept everything any any condition (pre-80's) and state quarters that looked nice. Overtime, as I became more educated in collecting, I really came to appreciate sizing down and acquiring nice specimens and variety (ie: U.S. Type Set). It was then decided that I would much rather have a complete type set with high grades then to have a mass amount of tubes and boxes full of coins in addition to 30+ dansco albums. So, I know your feeling. I am in the process of trying to sell off as much stuff as I can. Some of those type set coins are expensive.
I used to search a lot of bags of SQ's, and I set aside about $500 worth that should grade MS68 but after seeing how the values and sales of the higher grades had tanked, I never bothered submitting any of them for grading. I never had to dip into any of my collections, but if I was pressed and needed some money in a hurry, I would probably use these. First, I would see if one of the local dealers would be interested in buying them. Probably not, but even if I were to get 5c over face, it would be better than nothing. Chris
I used to pull all wheats I found as part of my cashiering job, then release the commons (40s-50s) when I got a full roll. Joe
i had so many $1 star notes from when i worked at the bank. i use to spend them all the time. i felt like a king
i sort of did this a few years ago when I had 10 circulated Ike dollars (not silver) that I pulled from circulation back in the 1970s and gave them to kids to shovel 3 feet of snow out of my driveway. not sure this counts as i dont collect Ikes and i got them all at face value. you should have seen those kids faces though ... just that was worth it. i dont think any of them had ever seen a big dollar coin before.
Oddly enough i was just thinking about this today. I went to the bank and i had a forty percent kennedy half in my pocket and it was the only change i had on me and i thoight to myself "hmm it would be interesting if i saw a 90 percent half in the tellers tray and had to spend a forty percent to get it. I would definitly do it but would rush back up to the bank with some clad change to get it back right away lol
