    Hello,

New to this forum and to collecting in general. Thought I would at least say hello and share a new buy that came to hand recently.
This was the dealer image but is the note I received. Feel free to offer thoughts..

    Thanks

Thanks for the welcome and comments.. I do like the blue reverse on this note, while probably rather common, it was a very nice note at a good price.~

Thanks for the welcome everyone and the comments on my new note.....Indeed, the color on the reverse of this one is really nice..
It looks as vivid in person as it does in the scan..... My problem is so many types of obsolete notes, makes it hard to concentrate on any one thing specifically~~

I have to say that I do like those with a ornate reverse but, I also like those that have a nice colonial plain front like some of the old Bank of Windsor notes from Vermont..

Dr. Kegg, I see we are rather nearby in distance~ I also read you get to Gettysburg occasionally.. are there any good shops/dealers in this area by chance? I don't believe there are in Hanover.. Other than HIGH priced Antique shops..

Welcome, and wow, that coin has a little of everything: color, ornateness, and a classic look. Nice pickup!

    Rev,

There are some okay shops in Gettysburg, but mostly antique shops around there. I have a shop that I go to in Harrisburg area that is decently/fair priced in way of coins and currency. Ken's coins in Linglestown. Another shop I go to is located within Middletown's "Saturday's Market", off of Toll House Road exit of 283. It is an indoor flea market with 3 coin/currency shops.

Also, Steelton, PA has an annual coin/currency show every October that has a lot of fair priced stands.

I also collect obsolete currency and scrip Rev so I know how you feel about the difficulty of concentrating on one area or type. When I first started I was determined to limit myself to just New Jersey obsoletes and more specifically obsolete private scrip. Believe it or not, I've actually stuck to my game plan. I see so many nice notes from other states that I sometimes have a hard time staying focused, but so far I have. The fact that there are so many different types available from my state makes it much easier. I love your note and good luck with your collection. Keep us posted.

I started with a nice Michigan obsolete and then was able to get one from Lewistown, PA. I sold it to a shop I frequent up there and wish I had it back. Now I'm torn between getting more Michigan obsoletes or starting with PA again.

When in doubt Doctor, I say keep it close to home. That's what I decided to do and it's worked for me. The "local" currency is more interesting to me because it comes from my back yard.

I think so as well. I wish I still had the obsolete close to home, but I'm sure I can find others around here.

I sort of thought most of what would be up there would be antique shops and those nice but expensive tourist type shops and the same goes for New Oxford, lots of antique shops but no real dealers around here. I'm sort of familiar with the Linglestown and Middletown areas, though it has been some time since I've been up that way.

I did pick one of these notes up here locally a few weeks back (phone image as my scanner isn't working just yet). Mine is issued, I would say vf-xf though I have not seen any for sale on ebay and the like.

I know I need to obtain some detailed books for this if I intend to continue or at least decide where to finally specialize in a certain area. I have some of the down-loadable Haxby state catalogs and while nice for general information, there seems to be much missing and it is somewhat dated.

In any case it is fun to see what is out there and usually I compare auctions and some dealer sites to the note I am looking at for a general idea as to a decent buy/bid price if I am thinking of getting a note.

The guy I go to in Linglestown always has used copies of those and other books for sale relatively cheap (few dollars). I haven't looked at the books lately to see the selection, but there are a bunch of them.
