I can't imagine he did not know this, but I went to my local coin dealer today and bought a bunch of coins. I paid in cash. When he gave me change I noticed a very bright red Lincoln in change. When I got home I took a close look at it was a 71s. By the luster it has a quality of strike I am sure it was very recently a proof. It could almost still go as aproof. So that made my discount even more. I wonder if he knew that? I mean it was so obvious it was brilliant red. Oh well, that made my coin buying day even better.
well if it is a proof and it was at all circulated it has very little value above face, but it's still cool to get one in change! I got a 1980 S Proof quarter in change not to long ago... it was pretty well circulated but still cool to find
Yes, but you have to pay about about $3 to $5 for a 1971 S MS65 RD. It definetaly looks MS. That's the way I look at it.
I have had similar luck lately with pocket change, and so far I have acquired three 70S, one 71S, a 72S, 73S, and a 74S. Some are browns but the 73 and 74 are reds, maybe MS 63. That was a great catch, and I can't believe the dealer didn't notice! NGC has a free membership where you can look up current prices. Doesn't hurt to look
I have several coin stores that give BU cents in change on a regular basis. It's a nice perk for the customer. I just bought several rolls this morning of some early 60's for about $1.50 a roll. The 71s is about $6.60 a roll at grey sheet ask if its a regular issue and ask on a roll is $35 in proof.
