For some time now I have been looking for a antique safe to keep some of my rarer items.

I dont like the new ones with their beebs and bloobs and pictured a small antique one. But my search here in Iceland had come up with nothing. The antique stores said that very few came to their stores and if they did they had a list of people that wanted them. So I had given up and was compenplating on buying one from the US and ship it to Iceland.

But yesterday I was buying some cardboard boxes and in that store on the second floor was a old safe that stood on a wood box in a corner. I fell in love with it and said to the person how much I liked it and that it was something I had been looking for for a long time.

I´m a firm beliver in Karma and more the often I have had things come to me that I have been looking for. And low and behold I was told that I could make them a offer. It´s a Danish safe made most likely from 1900-1930´s " My guess "

I´m not sure about the box it if came with it but the wood is old and the paint job was done at the same time. The paint job needs some help and i´m thinking about getting it done in black as the green is not original.

I have searched the maker Jar Nielsen & co copenhagen but with no luck.

So once again Karma gives me a little surprise when I least expect it :)

PS Taken on my Iphone today - Edit new pictures - Was not easy getting this up to a second floor hehe :)

PSS After we moved it I opend the doors and some old kingdom coins fell out from the 20´s. So I´m 100% sure this was ment to be mine. And dont worry Gudni nothing special just some normal circulation :)

PSS I got it for a really good price, Wayyyyyyy lower then the ones I have seen online and what I could expect from buying at a antique store
    Here it is

That is pretty sweet! Don't you just love Karma?

A lot smaller than mine and probably a lot older. Mine is from the 40's (I think).

I know this goes without saying (and is more for other novice members), but the safe is only as good as your overall security system.

Thats great Siggi,,,,congrad's. Only you my friend can find a cool old safe like this for cheap money and then open it up to find old kingdom coins from the 20's..
If I was you ,,,I would check the bottom of your shoes for now on before walking in to anyone's house for for the rest of your life,,,,,,LOL

Thank you and your dead on with the security system.

The thing is heavy as heavy can be and it took three of us with equipment to get it to the second floor. If someone would take this I would most likely be sued by breaking their back ;)

Very nice safe and I agree, black would be the best choice for the color.

Where is the safest place to keep your collection?

    Beautiful old safe!

What do you think? Is a big safe better than a safe deposit box? Banks get broken into as well and your access to them may be limited. And what about access if there is a natural disaster?

Another question: do you insure your coins? Do you keep photographs of your collection for the insurance adjuster? I keep meaning to take photos of my collection. While I have many pics of the individual coins, I do not have pics of them all together.

I would also think it would also be a huge advantage for insurance purposes if your better coins were slabbed.

I absolutely LOVE the lion in the middle there, very impressive safe. Definitely get a new paint job on it, or get it restored if it's not too expensive. A black, grey, or "metallic" shade of a color would be good :thumb:

It looks as though the wood portions were stained rather than painted originally.
Why not strip it of paint and see what the wood looks like?
I don't think any color of paint would look 'right' on it.
Especially something to make it look like a steel safe, when it is obvious even with paint, that it is not steel.
