Someone wants to trade us this coin for our saltwater fish tank we are trying to sell for $850.00. I don't know anything about coins and was wondering if someone could tell me what this coin may be worth. Thanks so much in advance!
That coin would have to be higher than a MS 62 (Mint State) for it to even come close to $850. In its condition, which i take to be around AU 55, it is worth far less than $500, and that's assuming it is uncleaned and genuine. So, it is NOT a good deal at all.
The details are there... but something is off. It appears it could have been cleaned. Details are XF IMO.
Thanks everyone so much for the replies. Like I said, I don't know anything about coins...just out of curiosity and to help further my education on this, what are some of the reasons for your answers? In other words, whats the major problems with the coin? One of my worries was getting a coin that could be fake. Do ya'll think this one may be a fake? The guy didn't claim to be an expert in coins, but said he has dabbled in them some and said he won this one in a contest about 8 years ago.
A comparable coin? I believe the coin shown in the following link to an eBay BIN auction is comparable to that which you've posted, with a purchase price considerably less than that which you've stated as yours preferred. :thumb: http://cgi.ebay.com/1881-Beautiful-5-Gold-Half-Eagle-HIGH-GRADE-/250850066676?pt=Coins_US_Individual&hash=item3a67d440f4
Accept cash only; way too many risks, and you're taking on all of the risk. Tell him to do what he's asking you to do...sell it to a coin dealer, get the cash, which will be far less than $850 and have him cover the difference. -LTB
I bet he's already brought it to a dealer and didn't like what he heard there so he's looking for a sucker.
