I buy and sell coins and I have adverts in many papers. So occasionaly I get fakes that come in most of wich are US coins that everyone knows.

Every phone call is the same " Hi I have a silver dollar that´s from 1800´s how much would you give for one of those. I have a few questions I ask like were did you get it and most are " I bought it last year at a market in spain, thailand, china ect and I know the answer. But sometimes people say things that make me want to see the coin.

Today I got a call and the person had the right answers, Came from my father who got it from his father. No odd mint mark under eagle ect, His father was in the states at the time. I tell him what the coin could be worth and explain the whole grading process wich I always have to do when it comes to people with no clue to coins. I ask him again some polite questions and we agree on meeting.

He turns up with the coin and it´s stamped COPY.........

Now I have a new question to ask I just thoguht that one wouldnt have to :)

Either he thougt that I was stupit and I would take the story above the COPY stamped on the coin or the person thought that COPY ment REAL ! Some people ! :)

That would mean his father got the coin after the Hobby Protection Act of 1973 went into effect (if his story can be believed, which it cannot).

I can't believe he would think it possible to slip this by you, not after you explained the 70 point grading system to him. He simply must not have a clue to anything in regards to numismatics.

Maybe he missed the word "copy"?
I do declare, folks (uninitiated) can be most clueless at times.

I notice the OP is from Iceland. If they can't read English then not knowing what the word copy is a legitimate excuse.

Sorry it wasted some of your time, but it was funny. I probably would not have thought to ask that either.

Human nature is to assume your coin is the rarest and most valuable coin. I have heard of people who are in disbelief that the word 'COPY' stamped into their coin means that is not worth thousands and thousands of dollars.

I guess you can find fake's even in Iceland,,,,,This coin you seen is not really a fake because it's stamped COPY,, So there was no intention to fool anyone,,,Expect for those people that don't have a clue or don't understand the words on the coin.

You are lucky Siggi if they don't get mad at you. I was the only person in my coin club who collected anything other than US coins, so therefor I was the "foreign and ancient guy", (yeah its fair they assume I know everything about 99.8% of all coins ever produced.....). Anyway, at our local show anything other than US that people had a question about would be directed to me. I have never seen a real ancient Judean brought to that show, and 99% of the Chinese were counterfeits. The "judean" were almost always the 1960's cereal box handouts. However, when I told the people this, they would scream, "My grandfather brought this home 70 years ago, you are a thief, (even though I never offered to buy it from them), you don't know anything, what a ripoff this whole place is trying to steal from us".

The bearer of bad news is never a happy place to be. It got to the point I simply stopped going to the shows since I didn't want to be asked questions about the string of fakes rolling in.

Wow, that person is either incredibly desperate, or mentally challenged to think they could pull something like that. Unless of course, as CoinKeeper noted, the person couldn’t read English, and therefore didn’t know what the word copy meant.

Maybe he thought it was the rare mint error where the mint accidentally struck "COPY" onto the coin :)
