The Red Book has the best info, but the prices listed are not reliable due to the present fluctuating silver & gold market.

The Blue Book has wholesale prices, in other words what you might expect a dealer to give you if you wanted to sell. The Red Book is retail prices. But as mentioned above, their prices are out of date at publication.

 

I hate this: I want to buy like 1,000$ in coin books for reference but only have like $5!!!!! :smile

 

For coin references, do not forget your local library. Its not the best since you cannot keep it, but there are tons of books on coins that are great educational reads. They are usually scarce at your local library, but with interlibrary loan they can be obtained.

I would list, for "fun reads" for coin collecting, would be; many books by Bowers, Frank Robinson's "Confessions of a Numismatic Fanatic", and generally any book on a specific series you are interested in.

Libraries are still a great boon, even in the internet age.

I'd say the best single volume book on US coin collecting is QDB's "The Expert's Guide to Collecting and Investing in Rare Coins". In my opinion this is a book that every beginner should have as it contains massive amounts of history and overviews of most US coin series. It also has sections on cleaning(a.k.a. NOT cleaning), proper coin handling, and coin show etiquette.

So that means me ...Ok, I will buy the book. I need a good reference book anyway. I have many pennies that seem to have errors , some I know are errors. Some I am not sure.

 

If you wish to have the best book on identifying known errors on small cents, (proper term), I would instead recommend The Cherrypickers Guide, Vol I. Vol I goes up to I think dimes, and Vol II everything else. Its the best reference for identifying errors and varieties sir. The QDB book is a great, informative book on US coinage and history, but not for your purpose.
