Unusual surface on 1897 nickel?

Guys, picked this up for $40 recently and the surface has me puzzled. I don't see any traces of cleaning, but the coin appears to be somewhere between a proof and a mint-state surface. Just sort of brighter/flatter than my MS Liberty Heads but not quite at the level of my proofs. Thought the detail in the hair and such was a bit more pronounced than I'm used to seeing. Cartwheel is there, but not eye-popping.
Maybe there was some light cleaning that I just don't see? For $40, I'm happy with it, but what do you think?
    Thanks,

If you see cartwheel it is not a Proof. And that coin is not a Proof. What I see is some orangepeel on a Business Strike coin.

It may have been an early strike with nice new dies and you may have some proof like characteristics because of this. May be a situation like on the proof like Morgans.
