You are correct (most of the time)...many of the things that they "find" are planted. One of my friends is on the show and they were asking me to provide items for him to "find". Then they were going to come into my store and I would give him any idea of what the item is worth. Don't get me wrong he still finds quite a bit of really nice stuff, infact I bought a 1942 Luger from him that he pulled out of a unit.

The show might be "fake" as far as like Beachloan said, they plant stuff for them to find to keep the show interesting. But, I know of a lot of people that make a living doing what they do. I've known people who paid 1K for a 50 foot by 50 foot storage unit and walked away with an almost brand new 30 foot speedboat and two jet skies. I haven't seen much more remarkable than cheap junk found on the show so far.

I think you have probably described it relatively accurately, but I will add one to it. If I am not mistaken, Barry is a plant. JMO.

Most of the 'reality' shows nowadays are rigged or totally fake.
Even the Repo shows have tiny print at the beginning of the show that say "actor portrayals of dramatized incidents".
Pawn Stars vet all their sellers and then recreate the 'deal' on a set.

So true... as are all "reality" shows. Even the original "Antiques Roadshow" (circa 1979) was totally scripted. But, like movies, they're still fun to watch.

Even though they're fake I'll still watch them.

Pawns Stars, Repo Men, Storage Wars is fake. Not sure about american pickers. Maybe it's fake because they can't be that stupid, though they don't always get big $$$ stuff, that's a tuffy.

American Pickers is scripted. The prices are agreed on beforehand, and the items are "placed" in order to be "discovered". Once again, that's not the point. These shows are as fake as Chinese "replicas"... but there's a huge market for them. Just enjoy, and don't worry about the reality of it all.

While I did not think it was totally real there was a disclaimer that I saw(or said)they usually had to buy 20 units to hopefully find one with something interesting.

    Are Pam Andersons Breasts real?

and the episode is old. When he counts the coins he said they were worth 3.25 each.
