One thing I want to put together is a complete set of ASE's, both BU and Proof. I know a lot of people disagree with this...but I want to assemble a slabbed set. My plan is to purchase already graded coins graded MS and PF69DCAM...both PCGS and NGC will be acceptable. I am floating the idea of including at least one of the WTC Recovery ASE's (probably a 2001) graded MS69 (not Brilliant Uncirculated) in the set. I know these coins carry quite a premium...but is there any other reason to not include one.

I'm probably not going to start assembling this set for a couple years yet...but I'm trying to plan out exactly what I want to collect...and I love ASEs.

Any opinions on these WTC ASEs?

IMO, they are ASEs just like any other, and the labeling of them as something special is just profiteering off of tradgedy.
I would never buy one at a premium and enrich someone with blood money.

The original reason for slabbing them with the special labels was to raise money for the victims. To then tell the people that paid the initial fee that went to the fund that selling the slab at the going rate is "profiteerig" and money spent on such a coin "blood money" truely says that no good deed goes unpunished. If you want to include the slab in your collection then buy it and don't worry about what the ill informed think.

Buy two or three if you can, I think they will be sought after quite a bit in the future.
But ebay may be one of the only places to get a good deal now.
They're hard to find elsewhere, I've been searching too.
And for the same reasons, to get a complete slabbed set, mine is only MS. (no proofs, they're raw from mint)
    Don't forget about the 2011S

Does anyone have a list of the dates that were slabbed as WTC Recovery coins? I want to add at least one...but maybe I'll get a couple.

There were a lot of dates and different coins as well from all over the world.

They were sent to TGP's and slabbed or re-slabbed with new designations.

So, there a many varieties of coins and years...

So, should I assume that all dates from 1986-2001 were in the recovery from 9/11. There must be a list available from PCGS as to what dates of ASEs they certified.

I don't know the details about the original purchase and where the money went but if it went somewhere worthwhile then at the time I would have supported it. At this point any money that you spend will go completely to the person selling the coin. Since that positive is now gone I would say that the premium isn't worth it. At this point you would be buying the slab and not the coin. Most people try to buy one of each type of coin, a WTC 2000 is not different from a basic 2000. Buy the coin, not the slab.

I disagree...these coins are from a historical event and thus are not the average coin. Just like coins recovered from a shipwreck. They do have more to them than simply "the slab."

I think this is an appropriate analogy. I own a 1991 "Gem Uncirculated" WTC ASE and have no misplaced sense of guilt or regret for it. I also have a number of shipwreck coins -- for those of us who collect partly out of appreciation for history, this is quite normal.

How about you focus on the set, first.

If you get a WTC coin for non-WTC coin price, it's your call.

Otherwise, just focus on the basic set.

I can understand the difference but that doesn't make them part of a set. If you are collecting the set you don't need the coin, if you want to collect a reminder of a historic event then you do.

If you do get a WTC ASE, you may want include the WTC commemoratives which do support the memorial.

Are you going after a 1995W?
    What about a 2011S?

If I find any good deals on the WTC ASE's I'll let you know

I am going to go after the 1995-W eventually. But, it is a little out of my financial reach right now and I will need to wait on that one. As for the 2011-S...my understanding is it will not have any mark on it. That they are minting them just to meet the demand for bullion coins and there will be no way to tell them apart from the normal bullion issue. I believe that NGC is slabbing them as being made in SF...but to me that is just a marketing gimmick and doesn't interest me. It would be like finding a Philly cent in a slab that says it was made at West Point.

As for the WTC ASEs. I just plan on adding a couple to the ASE set. I don't see a reason why I shouldn't include one or two if they meet my collection standards. If I can find them graded MS69...why not pick one up. It can serve as that date for the set and as something more. I don't have an interest in having a 2001 ASE and a 2001 WTC ASE...I think the WTC coin could fill the 2001 hole all by itself.

Thats smart, I do the same, got an innagural Obama (even though I don't like him) holder in 2009.
Breast cancer 2010 holder ASE, etc...

So yeah the special holders can fit nicely into the regular holders spots...

The slab in the auction is a Collectors Universe, the parent company of PCGS. It would not look good for a TPG to self slab the coins they are selling, so they were submitted independently and encased into proprietary holders...they are very legit.
