I have a penny w/ half the date missing. The coin is 30% off center. Since the date cannot be read, is it worth anything? What is the best way to find out what the date was supposed to be? Thanks for any help in this matter. John
Sure, it is worth something to an error collector. Please post photos if possible. That could be difficult. If it has a Wheat reverse it would have been struck sometime between 1909 and 1958. If the composition is steel it would have been struck in 1943. If there is no VDB on the truncation of Lincoln's bust it would have been struck before 1917. If it is a bronze Memorial Cent it was struck between 1959 and 1982. If it is a Zinc Cent Memorial Cent it was struck between 1982 and 2008. In 2009 there were four different reverse designs. If the reverse of your coin is one of them then obviously it was struck in 2009. If the coin has a Shield reverse it was struck in either 2010 or 2011. There is really no way of determining the exact year. You could get it slabbed now so years from now only those two dates would be possibilities.
