colligoergosum I collect, therefore I am

halfhunter - I can't believe the bad luck you're having with halves! Are you sure that the boxes you are searching haven't already been searched and dumped by someone else? Is the box sealed and are the rolls all tightly crimped on both ends? I once got a box from Wells Fargo that someone dumped there, but they had gone to the trouble of re-crimping the ends and putting the rolls in upside down so it looked like a fresh box.

No halves in Chicago lately. Nada. I've been skunked the last 12 boxes or so. I order them from PNC every week. My last box (back in April) to yield silver hit for 2 franklins and 3 40%'s. Then nothing.

I have been hitting silver in nickels (plus an 1899 V Nickel and a 1939D Jefferson) pretty frequently, and I started trying dimes this week. I hit 3 silver in my first 2 boxes (my first dime was a '41 Merc). I'm not sure if there are a lot of hunters in Chicago (statistically there probably are) or I am just running through a bad streak on halves. I am really digging dimes though. They are easy to search quickly, and they are yielding silver, so I may drop halves for a while.

I am planning on taking a road trip south next week, and I am going to hit some rural banks in Indiana and South-Western Kentucky. Anyone have any success in those areas?

Nope but now I know to stay away from that one. :pBought two boxes of nickels, box one is almost done with 5 war nicks and a '20-D buff (numismedia value about $10) that was on the end of a roll. :D

Well I search pre-dominantly the NW suburbs, and a few of the banks I get boxes from I know that I am not the only one. Also me and a buddy of mine go roll hunting alot of times to various banks looking for loose, rolls, or boxes. And a lot of times we here..."someone just came in and took what we had." So I would say yes there are more roll-searchers in Chicagoland area then this forum lets on.

Nice score on '20 Buff Merc! I got a few rolls of Nickels from my dump...but got skunked.

I would go back to that bank and get more if they have any.

All the good stuff was in one box, the other was dry. So, 1 buff ('20-D) and 5 wars out of two boxes. Not bad.

Wow, that's a nice ol' Merc, too bad someone took a brillo pad to it. If not for that, I think it's an AU50-53 coin.

I bought a partial bag of halves from a local (national) bank a few weeks ago. I paid about $180 for the partial bag, right off the machine. I got shorted more than $60 in halves, because it was full of junk - Mexican coins, car wash tokens, Guatemalan coins, mangled pennies, flattened pennies. But I got more $12 face in 40%, $3 face in 90% Kennedys, $2.50 in Franklins, and $1 in Walkers. I ended up making money on the deal, but I couldn't believe the garbage in the bag. I've been afraid to go back to try there again.

Interestingly, I now have a branch bank saving me all of the "junk" from their coin machine. Anything that gets rejected. I get $8 to $10 a week in Canadian coins, Mexico, etc. This week I got UK 1.50 pounds and Euro 1.08, and $6 in Canadian. Funny thing is, up until I asked, they had been tossing the junk. I even got an Ike from them once. "If it's rejected, it goes in the garbage." They aren't allowed to fish through it.

What are these "boxes" that all of you are talking about?

$200 total in rolls of quarters, halves, and dimes... nothing. One teller sold me a common wheat cent she had set aside. Nice of her. Also, I picked up 19 ikes.

When a local branch bank orders coin from "downtown" it comes in boxes of rolled coins. I think a box if halves is 250 face, or some such. Some banks will order "a box" for you, some won't. I've tried three times, and got skunked each time. I have a theory that my bank's "downtown" pulls out the silver, probably by weight. Just a theory. Similarly other coins come by the box. The preference ( in my mind) is a) CWR - or customer wrapped rolls, b) bags off the counting machine at the branch, c) BWR = bank wrapped rolls, d) loose coins from teller row, e) boxes from downtown. Just my ranking, of course. Each of these has paid off in a big way at one time or another for someone.

Hmm. So when I roll up to my bank tommorow, they will know what I'm talking about? What's the best kind to get? Do pennies come like this?

Wow, what bank is it that let you do that?

Also I think I might start asking a few of my dump banks what they do with the reject stuff, that would be pretty cool to be able to get some extra foreign crap all the time...lol. Also I only found one bank willing to sell me bags, but it ended up being someones dump. I might have to check back there again, and ask if they every have anyone else besides the dump guy, that dumps maybe a few rolls, or just a handful of halves at a time.

Ugh, someone took and assumingly spent two silver dimes I left on the kitchen table.

I should have never moved back home.
