    Hello All:

About fifteen years ago my grandfather passed away leaving his coin collection to his four remaining children. My mother received her share and put it in a safe deposit box. The first time my brother and I looked at the collection was recently and my mother insists on having the collection being split again between my brother and I.

The goal of this thread is to help me ascertain prices for the collection so it can be properly split into two.

It is not all coins, there are medals, ingots and even belt buckles in the collection. You will notice that my grandfather was a bit of a Reaganaut.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Are both you and your brother interested in collecting coins? If not, you might consider having the collection appraised by a dealer and one of you can buy the other's interest in the collection. If neither of you are interested in coin collecting, then why don't you just sell everything and divide the proceeds?

Welcome fresh meat! Jk, I'd price the memorial set double face value because of copper prices. "Face Value" means what it says on the coin. (Example: A quarter from 1943 has a face value of 25 cents.)

    Scott -

That mark Twain piece you have is worth somewhere north of $1800. And depending on condition you could get more than that.

Also, what exactly is it that you are calling an American Double Eagle ? Can you post pics of these coins ?

That is the boring way of doing it and yes my brother and I both collect coins.

Sweet, ignore the double eagle remark on my original post.

I have been able to get some of the prices for the coins off coinflation (metal weight at least) but what I really need is the prices for are the odd stuff like the belt buckle and the silver ingots. Do the ingots have collector value or just metal weight value?

Again thank you all for the help.

That depends on the ignot, some do and some don't. Some can be extremly valuable. And some will be worth silver weight alone.

I know it's an ounce of gold... but I think the premium has dried up a little on that one. I saw some trading recently for $15 over spot. Still in the original packaging.

Yeah this is just a quarter or less of the collection. He also bought 8 $500 bags of silver half dollars that my mother just found lying on the my grandmothers garage floor.

The Ellis Island dollars are US Mint products, and they have a minimal value over melt. But the rest are just silver rounds and typically valued at melt.

This one here is one that worth more than melt. if it the 1981 MA. Gold 1/2 oz or 1oz Gold coin.
It sure look like it but a good photo would make me sure.

You may want to download a copy of the coin dealer newsletter for $3.99: http://www.greysheet.com/ It will give you current dealer to dealer spreads and at least an indication of value.

A lady called me up last week with a set of MS and PR70 (NGC certs) Buffalos from 2008. I referred her to Modern Coin Mart which was the top buyer at around $7250 for the proof set.

I am actually thinking it would probably be best to just contact a dealer when the time comes and go from there. By the feedback it looks like it would be best to sell the whole set at melt value, but something tells me that is not the best way to go. Personally I think the Reagan belt buckle is BA as are the coins of Norway.

I entirely forgot but my grandfather had given me some of his foreign coin collection before he passed away. I never mentioned it because those are easier to price and they were given to me specifically and no one else. Nothing worth too much but I will say it was extensive with my favorite pieces being an Australian penny, florin and shilling all from 1943. It also compromised of German, Austrian, Honduran, Greek, Italian and swiss coins.
