Long story short, I got my first paycheck as a physical therapist and I wanted to blow some of it on coins. I went to the dealer today to find the elusive, 53 S...the last of my Franklins! He had only one graded MS 62 by my figures but as typical for the 53 S...horribile strike qualities. I couldn't fall in love with it so I passed. Looking on ebay, I found this one for 4 dollars more than what my dealer was going to charge me. Looks to be better strike, and even though none of the other coins in the collection are significantly toned, the blue coloration is sort of calling to me. So, what do you guys think? Worth the risk of horrible pics?

    I just bought it!

Nah, just yankin' the ol' chain. Strike looks questionable from those pics......still, maybe better in hand? You'll never know for sure unless you pull the trigger. Price seems OK and ya did make some poor old soul pay for the grading.......

I would take the chance and buy it for my Franklin set. The only problem is I am pretty sure I already have this date/MM and all mine are PCGS.

Go for it. That's a great price compared to what I paid for my 53S in 64 grade.

I bought about a dozen raw Franklin's from eBay to complete my Dansco and was happy with all of them. I don't buy slabbed coins, and personally I don't like the "hazy" look to this one. However, if you really like it, the price isn't bad.

I can almost assure you that this coin will have little to no coloration. You can never be sure with scans. I use terrible scans to make profit, and let's just say I would never buy that coin thinking I could make a profit due to the toning.

So with that being said, this coin should go right along with the other coins in your set. I say go for it!

Well, I took the plunge and bought that sucker today. I was watching an MS 65 and once the bidding reached 75 I stopped watching...too much of a price difference just for one grade considering I was just hoping for MS 63 or better for my set.

So, this hallmark coin will serve as my first slabbed purchase (yeah, thought about breaking it out of it's jail to fit in with the rest of the raw collection...stilll undecided) and the completion of my Franklin set AU or better. I plan to upgrade the AU/low MS coins, but for now it's officially a "complete" set! Whoo hoo!

I completely agree. I believe this photo was taken with some trickery. It won't be blue at all. Blue seems to be a pleasing color on coins for everybody so when they want to make one stand out, they'll use a blue light or blue reflective material.

But the price is right and I wouldn't be afraid to break it out. I've broken out higher dollar franklins for my own set. I save the labels though, just for the heck of it.
