Hey!! No Mutiny! Incarnate found silver today. You text me you found silver as well so a great day for the home team. Rare for all 3 of us to hit. I was actually on the phone with Incarnate when I dumped the first roll of 90%'ers in my hand. After the 2nd roll, I had to call him back lol. 2 years, that one stop today was my best single stop shopping. It could have gone to any of us or a stranger...just got lucky on timing.

If only I lived in Texas where people actually cash in silver, jeeze. I've said it before, I'll say it again... I'm envious of you guys.

I need to make a run to the farm country of south-central Jersey one of these days.

Hi. I'm new to this and I just went to a few banks asking for half dollars and Eisenhower dollars and out of 3 banks, only two had half dollars (8 total) and one Eisenhower dollars (3 total). There was no silver, but does anyone have any advice on what specific dates to look for or can anyone direct me to a guide on these coins? Also, if the teller just looks at their tray and says they have no half dollars, but does not go back into their vault to check for boxes or rolls, does this mean they really don't have any half dollar rolls/boxes or are they just to lazy to look? Also can anyone tell me if you need a bank account to order boxes of coins?

    Hi Adam1121,

For half-dollars what you want to look for is:
1965-1970 (40% silver)...1970s are hard to find though b/c this was a very low mint year.
    1964-& prior (90% silver)

    varities....
    1974 DDO (double die obverse)
No FG error on 1972 D, 1982, 1983, 1989....the FG is on the reverse by the eagles foot, I believe it was the coin designer's initials.
NIFC (not intended for circulation) 1987, 2002-present
S mint coins (proofs) which sometimes can be silver proofs
Anything unusual (I keep the foreign stuff I find)

For dollars I can't quite remember how that goes for the type II Ike's something about the islands of the Caribbean being different distances from Florida on the reverse of the coin. Google it and you will find out. There are some silver Ikes out there too, but I think these were all NIFC, just look at the edges to see if you have any silver...if you see white, or dirty black good chance of silver, but if you see the alloy of copper/nickel sandwich you have clad.

As far as banks go, a lot of banks don't really carry halves on hand. If you think about it you really don't see halves in circulation much anymore. So your best bet is to try and find a bank to order for you. This might be hard, but eventually you should find some. Ask your current bank, if they won't try other branches, if they won't try going around bank to bank asking for loose halves and seeing, one if you can score any silver this way, and two if any banks are willing to order boxes. In that case, you are all set and can go ahead an open an account with them to begin ordering boxes. Keep in mind you will need a dump bank as well. Some folks use the same bank but a different branch, others use a different bank altogether. Just try be respectful of the tellers that are making it a point to help you, for collecting silver, and dumping.

If all else fails and you can't find a bank to order for you, maybe you can try searching other coins Nickels & Dimes you will find some silver, and Pennies obviously have no silver but a lot of varities. But what I would do if I were you is to keep loose half & roll hunting until you find a bank that is willing to work with you and order halves. Eventually you should find one. Also, think of anybody you know that works at a bank, this could be another in for you. I still loose roll hunt on the weekend even though I get boxes during the week. Just another fun thing to do, and if you've read Erin (Aggiecollector's) most recent post you can see that some guys have their best finds just loose hunting, and not even dealing with boxes. This is a fun hobby but don't expect that you will get rich from it....(besides Erin, LOL), and just try to be respectful of the banks that are willing to help you. The greedier people get the more it hurts all of us trying to roll-hunt.

Good luck and welcome to an awesome hobby!

Thanks for all the info Chester! I guess the next time I go to get halves I'll ask about ordering boxes, hopefully at least one of the banks near me will order a box for me. I'll post back in this thread the next time I get some halves.

Thanks guys for the replies as for getting skunked 16 boxes in a row. Here is the good news I have not ordered any boxes for this coming week YET! I wanted to know what you guys thought about the type of boxes I was getting I'm guessing that from the responses that they are String and Sons (the rectangular type). I will give a small bit of advice to those that are just starting I have done sales all my life so going into a banks and asking for halves, silver them to order me a box is easy. And I asked at 10 straight banks to order me halves 2 weeks ago and 9 of them said yes no problem the 1 that said no well you know what happened I open an account and now they are a dump bank. I'm sure they will try to find a way to fee me or something if I keep at this.

But here is the thing I got the exact same type box at each and every bank I did not order from the same bank twice I order 2 boxes $1000 in halves from 8 banks and picked up $1000 at a time sorted them traded in and proceded to pick at next bank and so on. This was easy to do but hard to keep at it since I picked up skunk after skunk I could not believe it. I will probably do that order again this week but try so other banks that a farther out than the ones I did this week I can't get this much clad again. BTW I'm unemployed right now so yes I have time but someday I will score that new job and won't have the kind of time I do now but hope to have some silver to show for my time. Thanks for the suggestions and will consider a name change next week if I have too LOL.

    OMG ERIN! Nice!

After all you got this week there is nothing left to say. WOW!

Must be raining silver in Texas.

For me, I got 2 boxes of dimes, first one was skunk, second had 4 slv (58, 51D 50, 41)

The 51D was the last D mint dime that I needed, I now only nedd S mints (47, 48, 50, 54, 55) to finish the album.

    Today's finds:

    Box 4 of 5 Halves for the week: 2 x 40% Kennedy's (1968)
Box of dimes: 1 x Rosie
$120 in BWR dimes from WF: 3 x Rosie

At my dump site this morning I scored 40 Ikes. Now I have about 126 of them, and I really don't know why I'm getting them. I am pretty sure I have 4 type 2 1972's.

Anyone sell Ikes on eBay? I think Merc did? Just looking for advice on these things, cause all I see is money tied up in clad metal not doing me very much good.

Good day for a lot of folks on here! Way to Go!

Also got a 1989 Barbados 10 Cents (dime). I can't find much info on it...anyone have a clue what type of metal it is?

It looks silver, but I'm thinking it's not. Probably go into my foreign coin jar for the kids to play with when they're bored.

    The barbados coin is cupronickel.

In 1973, coins were introduced in denominations of 1¢, 5¢, 10¢, 25¢, and $1. Until 1991, the 1¢ was struck in bronze. Since 1992, copper-plated zinc has been used. The 5¢ coin is struck in brass, whilst the highest 3 denominations are struck in cupronickel. The $1 coin is a 7-sided equilaterally-curved piece. Many of the coins in circulation have been struck at theRoyal Canadian Mint.

Also, I have a question. Do banks usually carry boxes of nickels or dimes on hand? Because I don't want to leave completely empty-handed when I go getting/ordering halves next time I go to the bank.

Thanks Adam! I suspected it, so it's a nice novelty!

In my area most of the banks I'm a member at (especially the bigger regional or national banks) seem to have dimes on hand. I haven't been turned away without getting a box when I ask. I'll probably get two tomorrow.

    Adam,

Yes. What I do is when they dont have halves, I ask for few rolls of dimes, nickels or pennies. If I happen to find anything, I go back and buy in bulk. Someone asked about boxes of nickels, dimes, and pennies...yes banks always have them available. Quite a few people get boxes of pennies.

On another note to any new searchers, please know this week was EXTREMELY RARE. That was my single best find in the two years I have been at this. Boxes have been dry a while here except for one BIG BOX a few weeks ago. People are definitely turning this stuff in but you have to be in the right place at the right time to get it. If you search my posts, I have some very lucky finds but they are few and far between. Some banks around here might have 5 or 6 guys come in on a single Saturday looking for halves.
