Kyme Tetradrachm

I know that I am new here but I hope that you don't mind me sharing some bits from my collection of ancients.

This one is one of my favourites and illustrated to me the beauty that they could achieve with a piece of silver.

Greece, Anatolia, Kyme, AR Tetradrachm
Obv:– Head of Amazon Kyme right.
Rev:– KYMAION eft, KALLIAS (Magistrate) in exe. Horse walking right, oinochoe below all contained in wreath
Minted in Kyme. c. 165 - 140 B.C.
Reference:– SNG Von Aulock 1636. Sng Cop 103

Hi Martin
What a wonderful coin! I have looked at those many times, but I have pledged myself to stick with the collection of roman emperors for now.
Perhaps I´ll move to Greek coins in the future. In that case, I´m definately getting one of those. Your looks like it is in pristine condition, which makes it a perfect collectors coin. No wonder it´s a favorite.
Here is one of my favorite Greek coins, one of a few I posess;

 

You might be new here but I know you on other ancient sites Youve got some great coins from what ive seen in your gallery & this one is no exception. Love the female bust & the horse. Still havent dipped my toes in greek silver yet.

Your coin is also nice svessien, its bust is similar to my republic in my nameplate.

Martin, you really collect some beautiful coins. Great taste. I have to admit every time I see Kyme I start to get excited since one of my favorite areas are coins of Kyrenaika, and the first two letters are the same.

I am glad that people like them. I think that these Stephanophori are beautiful coins. They are very broad lumps of silver and are generally of fine craftsmanship.

Here is a different one from the same region:-

Aeolis, Myrina, Tetradrachm, Mid 2nd Century B.C.
Obv:– Laureate head of Apollo right, hair braided, ribbons flowing behind.
Rev:– MYRINAION left, Apollo Grynios advancing right holding patera and laurel branch with fillets; omphalos and amphora at feet; monogram left, all within laurel wreath
Minted in Myrina. Mid 2nd Century B.C.
Reference:– Sacks, ANSMN 30, Issue 25



These make a very pleasing sight side by side in my trays.
