Back in 2007, I purchased this GSA Morgan Dollar raw and submitted for grading to NGC. When it returned, I was not overly happy with the grade assigned. It did get a PL, but the number grade bothered me. I have been toying with the idea of resubmitting, but before I do, I'd like to get other opinions as to the grade you all think NGC would assign. I also would like to know, if I do decide to resubmit, should I pull off the current NGC grading band on the GSA holder or resubmit with it intact?
It appears to be MS65. Even in 2007, NGC was being lenient on GSA CC's. Some strikes are known to have weakness in Liberty's hair above the ear and in the definition of the eagle's breast feathers. Yours appears not only to show this weakness, but also in the hair above her forehead. If it's graded 64 and you're hoping to get a 65, it's a crapshoot. If it's graded 65 and you're hoping for a 66, forget it. Liberty's face has far too many abrasions to warrant a 66. Chris PS. Does anyone else have to scroll back and forth to read this?
If that coin is graded higher than 63 I would be very surprised. And I would not try to -re-submit it either.
I think this coin is a 64 AT BEST. I would not be surprised if it went a 63. Either way, I wouldn't resubmit. What did it grade?
I am thinking that NGC graded it MS64 and do not think it will go MS65 if resubmitted due to the abrasions on the face. TC
Help me understand...if you think it is 65 (possibly 66); both of these are definately a bump in grade, then why is that not worth it?
I see it as a MS-62/ MS-63, I'd be very happy with a MS-64 grade. I wouldn't attempt to get a 64 out of it if it is now 63.
I don't think it makes much a difference if we know the TPG grade or not. Most people here believe that TPGs certainly don't always get it right and in the case of CC Morgan's often overgrade. IMHO, I'll bet this coin graded a MS64 which I believe is too high. To me...this is a solid MS63.
If it is already graded 64, you'd have only a 50/50 chance that it could grade MS65. In this scenario, I'd like better odds than that. If it were submitted and didn't get a 65, then you would just have more money invested in the MS64 coin. If it is already graded 65, there is absolutely no chance that it would get a 66. (NOTE: I never thought there was a possibility that it could get a 66.) Considering both scenarios, I still say that the odds are too long and you would be wasting your money either way. Chris
My guess is that he got a 64 and is looking for a 65. If that is correct, I would take a shot. That $2000 price difference will pay for a lot of submissions. If it is a 63 and you are looking for a 64, it is not worth it.
If the coins surface was less hazy, it probably would grade higher, have you considered NCS? I think they might be able to remove the haze, but I'm not sure if that would remove the toning too, but without the haze, the marks on the face would be much less prominent and it may grade higher.
