I bought an Omaha Bank Hoard coin and have added a Bass, Mc Claren,Fitzgerald, Binion and a Tuscaloosa (civil war)coins. I have seen others but have not added anymore yet. Do you collect or own any hoard coins?
The early hoard coins from the states of fabled collectors are/were of great interest to collectors new and old, but since then, commercial greed has taken over such so that many "hoard" groupings of coins are designed for a premium ( to the TPG and the promoters~ sometimes with maybe other non-hoard coins added to the pot) similar to the "First strike" and other nonsense labeling. But every one chooses what they wish to collect, and as long as it please them, then that is fine. Welcome to the Forum Jim
I do not go out looking for a "hoard" coin. To me, a "hoard" coin is just something nice to know. Nice to know the coin's predigree, not a requirement. I will not pay a premium for the coin either. If I need a coin, I am looking for the coin, not the hoard's coin. The TPGs will put a "hoard" lable on any coin if you pay them enough. The only "hoard" coin that breaks this rule for me are the GSA Morgan dollars. A GSA Morgan, to me, is one in the original GSA slab. I do not seek out a Morgan in a tpg holder labled as a "GSA" coin. Only Morgans in the GSA Holder, to me are GSA Hoard coins.
I don't collect them but My Roosevelt set contains a number of the Omaha Bank Hoard coins. I didn't pay any extra for them.
I just think some of them are cool. I don't go out of my way to buy them, but if they are available at a reasonable price I will pick them up. I seldom pay extra for them though. I also like trying to dig up the story behind them.
I don't have any. I would like to pick up a GSA Morgan at some point though. Also, I plan on adding a coin from the Eliasberg Collection (I don't know if I would call that a hoard) someday. But, those are the only 2 "hoard" coins I would want.
1¢, 5¢, 10¢, 25¢, 50¢ Omaha Bank Hoard of my birth year. My 1816 N-2 large cent might be from the Randall Hoard, but there was no documentation with it. I am looking for half cents that trace to one of the half cent hoards, but no luck so far. As far as paying a premium, it depends on the coin, but I don't see anything wrong with paying a slight premium, perhaps more—assuming there is documentation tracing the coin to the Hoard.
One of my local BM dealers has a bunch of omaha bank hoard stuff in the "cheep slab" box. Mostly wheats, and a few rosies. Everything in that box is less than $20 and most of it is $10. I cracked a few of the wheats out for my lincoln cent dansco, as it matters not to me that they were "found" in a bank.
It's nice to have provenance on a particular specimen; i.e, ex John J. Ford Jr, Bowers, etc. But that isn't the primary factor when considering a specimen; only an added bonus.
That is an interesting question, most people who have large quantities of a specific coin, often doesn't want to let people know how many they have ( may affect the price). I am talking like they have rolls of BU 1909 SVDB or 1972/72 Die #1 lincolns. Hoards can be hard to sell off Jim
