This is a coin I found today. Does it look like to you guys and gals that the last T in trust is small? All opinions welcome, thanks for looking!
It is a little harder to determine what may have caused this when the coin has been plucked from circulation. Chris
Then I wonder what could have caused it....since at first I thought perhaps pmd, but if you've found others like that...then...what kind of pmd or perhaps some were minted that way?
I'd say it's not PMD. Being copper plated something that removed the lower part of the T after striking would break through the plating and expose the zinc. I can think of three things that could result in such a shortened letter. Die polishing, not likely because enough polishing to shorten the T that way would also make the arms and body narrower. A filled die, but it would be unusual to have such a sharp distinct transition. third possibility and the one I consider most likely is a broken hub. The bottom of the T was chipped off the hub that made the die. Broken letters from broken hubs are rather unusal on US coins but not unknown. The most commonly seen ones are the top of the D in UNITED on the seated half dimes and the two cent piece. Broken letters from broken hubs are also commonly seen on shield nickels. The transitions tnd to be sharp and frequently no trace of the missing part of the letter is visible.
