The characters are Chinese, also used by the Japanese and occasionally by the Koreans.

    It's a Chinese charm.

The four characters near the rim are chang ming fu gui which translates as "longevity, wealth and honor".

The large character in the middle is han. It is the character used for the Han Dynasty so its extended meaning is the Han nationality or Chinese in general.

The same character is sometimes used to refer to a man.

Thanks! I had tried drawing the characters here: www.nciku.com, but to no avail. Can you tell by the writing an approximate date?

    It's modern.

It was certainly made within the last 100 years and, perhaps, just the last 50 years or so.
